Riva didn’t say anything. The site was filled with trucks and heavy machinery, the same way it had been the night Kian and I had come out here. But there was only one other car in the lot, parked by the site shed.

I hid a smile at the memory of Kian taking me against the back of it. It might have even been the night this baby had been conceived, who knew?

“What were you dropping off again?” I asked Riva.

She swallowed thickly as we stopped next to the car and two men came out of the site office. I frowned when they walked to mine and Bliss’s side of the car.

On autopilot, I reached for the door locks, instinctively realizing something was wrong.

They beat me to it. The doors jerked open, and I screamed as strong hands grabbed me, yanking me out of the car. I twisted and fought against the big man I didn’t recognize, until one I did stepped out of the office.

Caleb.

My heart plummeted.

I stared back at Riva in helpless despair.

Riva’s mouth pulled into a trembling line. “You, sweetheart. I’m delivering you.”

REBEL

The betrayal hurt more than the binds around my ankles and wrists. They chaffed and scraped at my skin, too tight to budge.

Bliss whimpered beside me, her eyes so wide the whites showed the entire way around. I inched closer to her, quietly murmuring it was going to be okay.

Even though I didn’t believe a word of it.

Caleb and his two goons watched us from the corner, the three of them in a muttered conversation I didn’t like the sound of.

Words kept floating back to me.Pickup. Auction. Exchange.

Riva stood on the other side of the room, nervously watching on, not a part of their discussion but clearly not on our side either.

I wanted my heart to turn cold so I could hate her. Except I couldn’t process what was going on quick enough to get there. All I felt was hurt.

She dragged her gaze away from me and stepped up to Caleb. “Are those restraints really necessary? You promised you wouldn’t hurt them.”

He stopped his conversation to address her. “Does she look like she’s going to willingly stay here until they pick her up for the auction?”

Riva glanced over at me.

I glared at her.

“No, I suppose not.”

“Why?” I spat out at her, ignoring Caleb because his behavior wasn’t out of the ordinary. But Riva had blindsided me. I’d thought we were friends. “Why would you do this?”

She bit down on her lip. “I’m sorry. I never meant for this to happen. It all got so out of control. I never even knew you existed until the wedding day.”

I frowned, trying to make sense of her words. I couldn’t. “I exist, Riva. I exist, and so does the baby I’m carrying. Your grandchild! And you deliver me to this monster? Do you even know what you’ve done?”

Caleb sniffed in my direction. “She knows. Don’t buy her little sob story.”

For once in his miserable life, I actually believed him.

Riva was guilty as fuck. “You’re dragging him down, Rebel.”
