Nova shushed her, waving her hands at her to be quiet. “Just listen.”

We fell into silence again, all of us straining our ears to hear whatever it was Nova had.

Maybe she was imagining it. She’d had the longest seizure that night Caleb had stormed into our room and destroyed any semblance of peace we’d found here. She’d seemed better after a day or two of sleep, but maybe it had damaged her hearing.

Maybe she heard noises that were only in her head, the same way I did.

“There’s someone out there,” one of the men said in a hushed whisper.

“There’s not. You’re paranoid.”

“Nah, bro. I fucking heard the engine on their vehicle. It turned onto the street but never came past the house. Something is up.”

There was a pause for a moment, while the four of us women stared at each other, none of us daring to speak.

A groan came from one man. “You fucking kill me, Frank. Now I won’t be able to sleep until we go and see.”

“We’ll go out the back door and stick to the shadows. If they’re watching the house, we don’t need to make it obvious we’re aware.”

“You’re so fucking dramatic.”

“Chaos never came back. He’s fucking dead, and you know it. You want to be the same? Rotting six feet under, with worms chomping on your flesh?”

There was a huffed-out sigh. “Like I said, you’re dramatic. Get your gun. Let’s go check it out.”

The back door closed with a snick.

Nova stared at me wide-eyed, hope shining there for the first time since the Slayers had circled their bikes outside. “We’re alone. There’s only two of them here tonight, and if they’re both out, we can escape.”

Last time, we’d talked her out of trying to get help. But last time, we’d had Chaos looking after us, making sure we were fed. We were still his prisoners, but he’d provided us with everything we’d asked for.

It had been a case of better the devil you know. We didn’t know anything about the Slayers, other than they were an outlaw motorcycle club. Chaos had treated us well. Life with the Slayers could have been so much worse.

But things had changed now.

We were going to die in here if we didn’t do something.

I ran for the door to our prison bedroom, barging it with my shoulder. Nova blinked at me in surprise, but this was it. The only chance we were going to get, and I wasn’t going to waste it. Not again.

“Are you going to help me or what?” I ran at the door again, pain splintering through my arm when it connected.

But the fact nobody came to yell at us from the other side meant Nova had been right. There was no one else out there.

Hope sparked inside me, drowning out the pain. The other women joined in, each of us taking it in turns to run at the door, kick at it, all while praying the men who held us hostage wouldn’t return.

The door splintered.

Nova’s eyes went huge. “Oh my God, it’s working. Don’t give up!” With giddy laughter, she ran at the door again.

The locks gave, and the door sprang open.

For the longest of seconds, all four of us just stood there, staring at the gaping hole that offered us freedom.

It was right there.

We just had to take it.

A gunshot cracked through the still night air.
