Luca grinned. “Ah. I see. Monogamy man.”

I chuckled. “Not sure I’d call it that. But I am seeing…people? I don’t know how to explain it.”

He cocked his head to one side. “Try. Sounds interesting.”

I shrugged. “Vaughn is my ex, if you can really call him that. We were never officially out as a couple, but we fooled around in our teens. And Rebel…”

“The cute little dark-haired woman I’ve seen you hanging around with at fights, I presume?”

Just the thought of her name spread a smile across my face. “She’s unmissable.”

Luca nodded, leaning on the ropes. “So Vaughn is the big blond biker?”

“Nah, that’s Fang. Don’t even ask how he fits in. It’s complicated.”

Luca laughed. “I see. You’ve got your hands full; I get it. Shame. You’re hot.”

I flushed. “So are you.” But there was nothing behind it. He wasn’t Vaughn.

Luca stood slowly. “Can I ask you something personal?”

I jerked my head at the pads he’d been holding up while training the other fighter. “If you hold those up for me, you can.”

He slipped his hands into the straps on the backs and then clapped them together before holding them up. “I heard you talking with Gino about your money troubles. You fixed that up?”

I shrugged, thumping the pads a couple of times. “Maybe. Got a job on a construction site. Starts tomorrow.”

“What’s the pay like?”

I snorted. “Lousy. But a job is a job.”

“I’ve got better ones going at my club. Come join us.”

I shook my head. “Not doing the match-fixing thing. I thought about it for a hot minute, but it’s not for me. I’m too…”

Nice.

Decent.

Honest.

This time it actually felt like a good thing.

Luca snorted. “Is that the shit they’re trying to get you into here? We got way bigger fish to fry over at my club. Way bigger paydays too. I’ve had my eye on you for a while.”

I paused and raised an eyebrow. “You talk a lotta talk. But I don’t actually hear a real offer. Gonna have to give me more details than that.”

He chuckled. “You think I’m just gonna lay my cards out flat on the table without so much as you buying me dinner?”

“Don’t think my partners would appreciate that too much.” The door opening caught my eye, and I did a double take at the people in the doorway.

Luca followed my line of sight. “Looks like their ears were burning.” He clapped me on the back of the shoulder as he left the ring. “Think about it, okay? I’ll promise not to flirt with you anymore, since that’s clearly not gonna get you on board, but I think you’d be good at what we’ve got going on over there. You’ve got that ‘puppy-dog eyes, trust me’ sort of face. Exactly what women like.”

I frowned, no idea why that would be needed in a boxing gym, but with Rebel, Fang, and Vaughn standing in the doorway, I just wanted Luca to go.

I needed to fix what I’d broken yesterday. Because it was clear to me now that nothing was ever going to compare to what I’d found.
