Her eyes were wide. “I don’t want to be here at all. In Saint View, I mean. Bad things happen here.”

It crushed me to hear her say that. She would probably go back to her parents, and I’d never get to see her. That sucked, but if it was what was best for her, what she needed to mend her heart, then I would have to deal. “You can go wherever you want to, Kara. The world is your oyster.”

I couldn’t blame her for wanting to be anywhere but here.

But it was my home, and it was all I knew. Saint View was in my blood.

Fast footsteps came from the hallway, and then a thumping on the door. “Rebel! Kara!”

“Don’t let them take me!” Kara whispered frantically.

Oh, my freaking, beat-to-shit heart. I wanted to kill Caleb all over again for ever laying a finger on someone like her. I was already all sharp edges. But he’d taken Kara’s softness and trampled her into the dirt.

“It’s Fang. He won’t hurt you. Ever. Can I let him in?”

He thumped on the door again.

She gazed up at me with big eyes that made her seem about five years old. “I don’t want to be sold.”

Fucking Caleb.

Assuring Kara that would never happen, I unlocked the door and opened it.

Fang stood on the other side, grinning from ear to ear.

It was wholly unsettling. He never smiled like that. “What’s happened?”

His eyes sparkled, and he stepped aside to reveal Vaughn, standing behind him, with a baby in his arms.

REBEL

Iclosed the hospital door quietly and left Kara nursing her baby. I’d insisted on bringing them both here to be checked over. It would have been a lot easier to have Hayley Jade treated at the clubhouse, but there was no way I was letting Hawk try to insert a needle into that child’s tiny veins. She’d already suffered enough without him butchering her arm too.

I wouldn’t leave them tonight. I’d sit right here, outside their door and keep watch. My knuckle-dusters were in my back pocket should I need them.

Though I knew at least one of the guys would be wandering around here somewhere, even though I’d told them we’d be fine.

I wasn’t mad about that.

But I was mad about something else.

I scrolled through the numbers on my phone until I found the one that had previously been labeled Torrence. After our trip to his homestead, I’d secretly changed it to Dad.

Now I felt foolish. This was the man who’d refused to accept his daughter’s baby. Who’d gone as far as saying she was dead because she’d dared to go out on her own. I’d spent hours today, staring at Hayley Jade’s tiny, innocent face. I just couldn’t fathom how someone could say something like that about their own child.

I hit the call button, and it rang a few times before he answered. “Bel? What’s going on?”

The sound of his voice only made me angrier. “Why did you tell the girls Kara was dead?”

“Kara?”

“Louisa Kara. You do remember your own daughter, don’t you?”

There was a sound of ruffled bedclothes, sheets and quilts shifting and moving around him. I’d clearly woken him up, but I didn’t care.

He cleared his throat. “Why are you calling at two in the morning, asking about your sister?”
