“And that was Caleb in the front,” Bliss said in a wobbly voice. “I know his voice.” She turned her face into Nash’s chest.

He put his arm around her, rubbing her back softly. Over her head he said to the rest of us, “We’re taking her to the hospital to get checked out. Can you get them all back to the clubhouse?”

We had my truck and Vaughn’s car, so I nodded. We all walked slowly back to the parking garage, Rebel shooting worried glances at her best friend, who assured her she and the baby were both fine.

But even I could see the worry in Bliss’s eyes. Scythe and Nash put her into his Jeep, and the three of them took off for the hospital.

Vaughn unlocked his car, and most of the women piled in there, quieter than I’d ever seen them, demons in their eyes.

Fang got into the truck beside me. “They don’t look good. Do they?”

They looked like women who had been through too much, too many times. I already knew they’d be gone by the end of the week. Too much had happened here, and this was just the straw that would break the camel’s back.

Rebel got into the back seat of my truck and put her arm around Kara, who burst into tears, crying on her sister’s shoulder. “I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry.”

Rebel shushed her. “Why are you apologizing? None of this was your fault.”

“Of course it is! I just ran away! I left you!”

Rebel hugged her sister tight. “You didn’t. I pushed you away. Told you to run. You did exactly what I wanted you to do. You kept yourself out of danger. You were amazing.”

Kara sniffed. “You were the one who pulverized that guy’s face!”

“Yeah. I did.”

I glanced into the rearview mirror, and she was grinning from ear to ear.

We drove back to the clubhouse mostly in silence, all of us lost to our own thoughts. Fang reached a hand back for Rebel’s, the two of them driving home like that, even though it had to be killing his shoulder.

We drove through the clubhouse gates, and I slowed when Ice waved us down.

“What’s going on?” Fang asked him.

“So…Hawk kinda got shot.”

Fang blinked. “What? Here? By who?”

“Long story.” Ice turned to Kara. “Hay Jay is fine, though. Queenie told me to make sure I told you. Queenie has her, and she’s been fed, and she’s had a nap, and I dunno, other good baby shit. Burped and farted or whatever.” He turned back to Fang, switching topics. “It really wasn’t that big a deal. But Aloha took War to the hospital because he was threatening to ride there himself after Nash called him about Bliss. And you saw him, he needs a fucking hospital himself. Couldn’t have him falling off his damn bike halfway. He said to tell you to deal with Hawk.”

Fang groaned. “That’ll be fun. Thanks for the update, though.”

Ice saluted him and closed the gates behind us after we rolled on through.

Kara got out the second I got to the clubhouse door, running into the building, searching for her baby. I was pretty sure she was never going to leave that kid’s side again.

Fang got out too, pausing before he closed the door. “I gotta go deal with whatever the hell this situation is. You two coming in?”

I went to say yes, but Rebel climbed between the two front seats, which probably would have been impossible for anyone else but a short-ass like her to manage. “Can you take me somewhere first?” she asked me.

“Anywhere.”

She leaned out the window and kissed Fang. “We’ll be back. I just can’t be in there right now. I need a minute. Or an hour, I guess. We’ll be back.”

He didn’t question her. He never did. He just gave her whatever she needed, and right now, that seemed to be me, and this car, and maybe an open road.

I got it because it was exactly what I needed too. Somewhere for the energy to flow. For it to be released. It was too big and raw and powerful for it to be contained.

“Whatever you need.” He stared at me. “Keep her safe.”
