He picked up my fingers again and led me into the darkness. “Well, this whole area is going to be a shopping village. So, see here, this is where shop fronts will be.” He waved his arms in the opposite direction. “It’s hard to imagine it right now, but this is where a multi-story parking garage will be erected. Careful of those reinforcement bars, they can have barbs.”

I edged toward a deep, dug-out hole, but Kian grabbed my arm.

“Don’t get too close to that either. They’re holes we dug for the supports. The edges are crumbly, and if you fall down there, there’s no easy way of getting back out. I watched one of the other guys do it just the other day.”

I peered down into the hole. It was at least fifteen feet down and pitch black at the bottom. “Damn. Was he hurt?”

Kian grinned and shook his head. “Nah, but it was pretty funny listening to him shout for help and jump up and down, trying to get out. We left him there for a bit before sending a ladder down for him.”

I rolled my eyes. “Super mature.”

He shrugged. “Hey, that’s what you get for getting too close. He should have known better.”

I paid attention to the warning, and watched where I walked, using the flashlight on my phone the farther we got away from the perimeter lights.

I tapped the side of a cement mixer. “Do you ever use this?” A memory jogged loose in my brain. “I think my dad worked on a construction site once when I was a kid. I remember watching the cement mixers turn around and around. They were kind of mesmerizing. At least to my four- or five-year-old brain.” I cocked my head, studying the machine. “How do you even get the cement all up in there?”

“Pretty simple. Cement powder and water go there. Press the button here, and the machine does the work for you.” Kian pointed out all the various parts as he explained. “But cement work is boring if you ask me. Excavators are where it’s at.”

I tugged him toward one. “Is this like the jock table versus the nerd table at high school?”

He laughed. “Pretty much. The excavator table is definitely the popular clique.”

“And you’re the star quarterback already, aren’t you? Mr. Popularity.” It was easy to imagine. Kian was so outgoing and funny, I doubted he ever wasn’t the most popular person in the room. Or the worksite, as the case may be here. Even though he hadn’t worked here that long.

He winked at me as he drew the ladder down from the biggest excavator I think I’d ever seen in my life. I wasn’t even close to as tall as just one of its wheels.

“Whoa. Is this yours?”

He put a foot on the bottom rung. “Yep. Follow me up. You said you wanted to drive it.”

“Hell yes, I do.” The thing was a beast, and I was already imagining the rumble of power when it started.

I followed him up, sticking close behind him, and pausing when he got to the top and settled in at the controls.

I surveyed the tiny cabin. “Where am I supposed to sit?”

He pointed to his lap. “Right here.”

I had to admit, it was the best seat in the house. I sank down onto his thighs, and he immediately put one arm around me, his hand flattening on my belly. His lips came to my neck and sucked gently.

Pleasure shot through me, and I let my eyes drift closed, enjoying the touch of his lips at my neck and his warm hand wandering up my torso toward my breasts.

He took a handful and squeezed me there. “Mmm. You feel good. You should come to work with me every day. Would make the day go a whole lot quicker if this was my reward.”

I turned my head and kissed him but then pulled away, sitting up straight. “Come on. You promised I could drive this thing. Quit trying to distract me with your wicked ways.

I put my hands on the controls, wincing a little at the ache in my knuckles that had taken a bit of a beating beneath the knuckle-dusters.

Kian covered my hands with his big ones, his thumbs smoothing over my injuries. “I’m sorry I didn’t get there quicker.”

I shook my head. “I’m glad you didn’t. I needed that win.”

He lifted one of my hands to his lips, kissing my beat-up fingers, but then put them back on the controls. “Okay, this is how you start it.”

The huge machine rumbled to life beneath us.

My eyes went wide. “Holy shit!” I shouted at him above the roar of the engine. “This is insane!”
