At night, she’d put the thing on her nightstand as directed. During the day, she’d carried it around in her purse as if he’d suddenly call and request her presence. A girl had to be prepared.

“Hmm.” He glanced up at her again. “So, Dante?”

At the last minute, she’d put a safeword at the bottom. “Yes. Unless you think it’s silly.”

“Nothing silly about it.” His chair thunked upright. He set the list down but kept hold of the ruler. “Stand up.”

She rose to stand and hoped her legs weren’t shaking too much.

“I’m glad you wore a skirt again.”

The fact that he’d have easier access wasn’t the only reason she chose it. He’d noticed her outfit the last time she’d quaked in his office, so hell yes, she was wearing another one.

He rounded to the front, and her thighs squeezed together as if that would stop the ache rising there by his approach.

“I remember that look.”

Her heart thudded against her ribs, and she swallowed.

“The way your eyes followed me as I paced.”

Gah.Had she been that obvious back then? Of course, she had. She and every other female in the room.

“You were quite passionate about your subject,” she said.

One side of his mouth quirked up. “What else did you think about me?”

Admitting her crush would be humiliating, perhaps, but what did she have to lose? He would think she was silly. “I’m embarrassed to say what I thought about you.”

“Desiring someone isn’t anything to be embarrassed about—especially as an adult.”

“Which we both are.” Good, her voice was stronger.

“We are. And we both have certain needs. I know now what you don’t want, but what are you hoping for?”

You.“A teacher. Will you? I mean, be mine?”Oh. My. God.She even sounded like a teenager with an elephant-sized crush. Her face dropped to her hands, now nearly white from twisting her fingers together.

His hand reached out and stilled her twisting fingers. “Look at me.”

The knot in her throat was pushed down with a lot of effort—almost as much as lifting her gaze to his face. She hadn’t expected to see kindness there. It almost made her want to cry.

“Yes. I can do that. But I’ll require you to honor my directions and commands. That’s what I need.”

“Like not using the ruler.”

“Among other things. You enjoyed following my order?”

“Yes.” In a strange way, she had. It was like she knew what todo. No thought, no bargaining with herself. It was … black and white. And she’d anticipated the smile he now wore when she could stand before him and say she’d done what he’d asked.

“Very good. I certainly enjoy giving them. And, if you do obey, you’ll enjoy the rewards. If not, you are free to leave.”

“I don’t want to leave.”

“What do you want?”

“To learn.” She took in a shaky breath. “To submit to you.” Wow, she really said the words aloud. A huge weight lifted from her chest. Maybe that was why following his next command was shockingly easy.

“Bend over the desk. Ass up.”
