“Look at this,” said Jamie. “Now this is what we want.”

I stepped over, following her gaze. The ring Jamie had pointed at was tiny and delicate. It was in white gold, with three diamonds cut to fit the three, minuscule rose carvings.

“Doesn’t look fancy enough,” I said.

“Fancy?” said Jamie.

“What?” I growled.

“Just never heard you say fancy before,” Jamie said.

“Well, we want it to be fancy, don’t we?” I replied.

“We want it to be perfect,” Jamie said. “And it needs to photograph well on a hand.”

Finally, she settled on another one.

“Look at that.”

I stood next to her and bent over.

The ring was beautiful, no doubt about it. It was slightly thicker than the other two, made of rose gold. A mounted plinth on the top held a gorgeous diamond that glittered under the light.

“I think this is the one,” said Jamie, pointing at the rose gold. “But I don’t know. I need more time. Maybe we can come back and think about it?”

“I can’t come back here,” I said. “I’m much too busy.”

“So how will we decide?” said Jamie.

“Begging your pardon, Eric,” said Katherine. “But why don’t you get Jamie to try them on? She can take some photos.”

I looked at Jamie, and she looked at me. There was complete panic on both our faces.

“Okay,” said Jamie.

“Yeah,” I said.

Jamie took her phone out of her pocket. She pressed the camera icon and then looked at the ring. She took a few pictures, then frowned.

“No,” she said. “I need to see it on someone’s hand.”

“Here,” I said and picked up the ring.

Without thinking, I picked up the ring and took Jamie’s free hand in mine. It was soft and warm, and her skin was pale. I liked her hands. Always have. Gently, I caught her ring finger between mine and slipped the tiny jewel on, until it sat perfectly beneath her knuckle.

I looked up into her eyes, and she looked into mine.

“Um,” I said. “Take a picture?”

“Sure,” said Jamie, and quickly held up the phone. She pressed the button. There was a click, a flash.

“Okay,” I said. “Looks good. You want me to—”

“—No,” said Jamie. I was conscious that somehow, through some crazy twist of fate, this whole scenario was shaping up to be less than professional. It couldn’t have been more intimate.

The whole rest of the morning, I was thinking about what it would be like to put a ring on Jamie’s finger for real.
