The fire’s moving faster than I anticipated. We need to get moving. Standing, I wince as my ankle sends a jolt of pain up my leg, stopping me from gaining control over my body, and I fall forward. I catch myself over Maitlyn’s body. She falls back and I hover above her. Kraine moves forward, and his head is right in my face as he curls his lips and bares his teeth at me.

“Easy. It’s all good, boy. Just slipped. Easy.”

Lowering my eyes from the dog, I catch sight of Maitlyn’s bountiful breasts and watch as they rise and fall fast. I stifle a moan and glance further away so I’m not acting like the creep she must think I am.

“Sorry, Maitlyn. I’ve got a little ankle issue. It caught me off guard.”

Shifting my eyes to connect with hers, my cock twitches and so badly wants to rise. Her eyes drop to my lips, and instantly my chest roils with a hungry need matching the heaving of her chest. I ease myself from her as I get my feet underneath me. I continue to fight the urges and inner cravings for a woman that I’ve been fighting for years now.

It’s somewhere I won’t go and can’t pursue. My heart and head —and more than the semi-flaccid one in my pants— all need to get on the same fuckin’ page.

“Let’s get going.”

Grabbing the rucksack, I throw it onto my back and turn away from temptation. Shutting down the part of me that is more than a breathing man recognizing a beautiful woman and desiring her closeness. The need for a touch of her hands. The smell of the place right under her ear. The softness of her chest. The feeling of making her mine in ways that happen in the darkness of night. It’s a pain I’ve got to endure.

The wobbling on my ankle, the realization slams hard into me. We’re going to be caught in the darkness now.

Clicking my tongue, “Let’s go, Kraine.” If he moves, she’ll move.

Reaching out my hand, I help Maitlyn stand and ensure she’s ready for the next part of our journey.

“I’ll lead. Keep up.” My voice sounds gruff to my own ears. I need to check myself.

I look over my shoulder. Her brows furrow and her eyes look a little more doe-like. I clench my jaw. I need to soften my tone and be gentler with her. I changed and I’m sure it’s confusing to her, but it’s for the best.

Because I’m not what’s best for anyone.

CHAPTERSIX

MAITLYN

Since we restedand Jake and I got a little too close, he’s been a man on a mission, forcing a pace I’m less and less uncomfortable with as we move ahead, pushing us faster, and I barely keep up.

“Jake… Jake!”

Stopping, he turns. “What?”

Swallowing and working to catch my breath, I lean over and rest my hands on my knees as I struggle to speak. “Too… damn fast.” Large breaths choke me after each word.

“Maitlyn, the fire is moving fast. If we don’t get to the cave—”

“Cave?! You didn’t say anything about a cave. I thought we were going to a house or a cabin!” Amazing how panic can instantly make you say more than you physically thought you could.

“Those things burn up.” The simple statement sends a chill down my spine.

A cave?

My stomach drops, and I can only stare at him as I work to wrap my head around the idea of staying in a cave overnight with Jake alone.

Jake’s brow furrows as he watches me. “Maitlyn? You still with me?”

I’m notwithyou. I’m with me.

Straightening myself, I rest my hands on my hips and take in large gulps of air as I work through my reasoning. It’s only for tonight, and tomorrow we can move on, but as I eye the raw sexiness of the man slash hero before me, something about him scares and intrigues me. It’s a potent combination. He holds himself with such confidence, it’s intriguing and dangerous at the same time. He’s dripping with a forceful magnetism that’s like a tractor beam.

He’s not the only one dripping.

Fuck. Get a grip, woman!
