Any updates would be real nice, I heard him say, and fell about two inches at the shock of how distinct his voice was in my head.

I focused on his form, watching the wind rake through his fur as he galloped.

Xavier, can you hear me?I projected. It’s Galanthia. I’m right above you.

The wolf tripped, rolled a few times, and then recovered with ease. Our pace matched once more, and I watched with a feeling of accomplishment as I heard him speak again in my head.

Yes, I can hear you.

Miraculous cords strummed in my center.I don’t see anything out of the ordinary yet.

How far do you think he ran?he asked.Goddess, I was so mean to him. I was rude. I chased him off, Galanthia. I said the stupidest things.

I focused on the path ahead.Don’t worry about that now.

I’ll be worried about it until we find him, he argued. Please, tell me what you see.

Honey hues rushed my body, enhancing my senses tenfold. I heard Izdor and Juriah speaking distantly, our communication lines constantly open in case things ever went south again. Beyond that was the thrum of thoughts collectively given by the pack itself. Wolfcreek chimed in with its city sounds and energies.

Nothing other than that. Nothing distinct.

I frowned.I can’t hear him anywhere.

But you see his tracks, right?

Inspection proved that to be affirmative.Yes, I see tracks. I think we’re still heading in the right direction.

Can you tell the others?

Howls and shouts echoed in the surrounding area. For a moment, I returned to my nightmare with a speed that made it feel like my heart was seizing. A moment was all it took. A moment and then a few seconds where it felt like I was losing flight.

And then I fell.

Galanthia!

From whence the shout came was unclear. I spun out while losing sight, my mind going off in a direction opposite my body. It felt like my skin was being flayed, and sickening zaps were burning my sides. My neck ached. My eyes stung.

Galanthia, it’s not them, Xavier spoke clearly.I promise you it’s not them. They’re not chasing you anymore. I’m not chasing you anymore.

Recovery came swift. My left wing extended and then my right, creating a parachute that caught me as I reached the tops of the trees. A branch whacked my leg, but I hardly felt the pain as I righted myself and flapped my wings hard. Back into the air I rose while holding my head, trying to keep myself from spiraling.

Are you alright?Xavier was below, white spots dotting his reddish fur.Galanthia, answer me.

I groaned.I’m fine.

Come back to the ground before you fall again.

You’re not the boss of me, I argued.

Laughter split my head in two. I knew my nosy friends had been listening in on this channel. Given the nature of our bond and the fact that my spiraling had likely drawn their attention, I was thankful that they had tuned in. One of them had probably called my name while I was spinning. I couldn’t remember.

Xavier sighed and I could nearly feel the deflation of his chest. What are we going to do with you?

Absolutely nothing, I jabbed as I rolled my eyes.Focus on the task at hand. Stop flirting with me.

Stop falling from the sky and I won’t flirt with you.

Somehow, hearing him speak the truth eased some of my dizziness. I kept my eyes peeled as I progressed through the sky, noticing the way the path dipped off to the left. This kid had taken off farther than I would have anticipated for being so small. Shifter children were delicate, and dangerous at the same time because their control had yet to be developed.
