Yesterday’s search party returned to my mind.

“I mean, if Uncle Andres isn’t ogling Sadie again.”

“And if he is?”

I chuckled. “Wouldn’t be the first of us to have a crush.”

“I think she might reciprocate it.”

“Well, it won’t last long. Andres isn’t exactly the best at dating.”

Galanthia smiled knowingly, her eyes darkening like she had kept quiet some great secret. “Who among us is truly that good at dating?”

Sly wasn’t usually her style. This was a side of Galanthia I hadn’t encountered, but then again, there were many things we didn’t know of each other because of our constant clashing.

She traced my palm while leaning toward me. “Don’t tell me you’re suddenly shy.”

I guffawed. “What!”

She released my hand. “Perhaps you’ll think better without my influence.”

And then she took off for the swings where Leo was attempting to do a flip. After she snatched him out of the air and spun him around, I gathered myself from the bench and went to meet them. My son had ripe strawberries for cheeks. Dark circles lounged under his arms and stuck his shirt to his body.

I laughed while pulling him into my arms. “You’ll need a bath. Let’s go visit Uncle Andres.”

“I just saw him the other day.”

“You just got rescued yesterday and you’re acting like you haven’t fallen down a hole.”

He giggled while scrambling to my shoulders. Galanthia had spoiled him by carrying him like this all day.

“I’m hungry,” he told me. “Can we have steak for dinner?”

Galanthia rolled her eyes in amusement. “He’s got quite an appetite!”

“Can’t I have dinner with you, Galanthia?”

“Dear boy, you must spend some time resting with your family.”

Leo groaned. “But I want steak with you!”

She smiled sheepishly. “How did you know I was thinking of making steak?”

“I don’t know. I guess I could feel it.”

Galanthia and I traded shocked expressions. My boy could hear and feel things from the woman I wanted to avoid. Now how in the world was I supposed to get around that?

Was it even something I needed to get around?

I knew I had to acknowledge Leo’s ability to feel things. He was a sensitive kid, and he’d always been receptive to his fluctuating environment. Emotions were a way for him to identify various situations. It was how he was so good at intuiting what his grandmother needed and when.

If he had bonded with Galanthia, then it tracked that he could do the same things with her. But when had it started? And why had it started?

I coughed a couple of times. “Anyway, you’ll be with your uncle for dinner. I’ll pick you up later.”

“Can’t I spend the night with you and Galanthia?”

I stammered over some kind of appropriate response. Alright, that was too spooky and weird. It hadn’t occurred to me that I wanted to spend any longer than dinner with Galanthia. But checking in with my wolf told me another story entirely. Galanthia seemed to be boxing identical feelings.
