“Oh, well…” Izdor blushed while grabbing a towel. He splashed some water on it and focused on scrubbing the counter. “Well, I think Sadie has other interests.”

“What do you mean?”

He twisted the towel over the sink. “Someone else has the hots for her.”

“Ah, I see.”

“It was bound to happen. People have overlapping crushes sometimes.”

I pursed my lips thoughtfully as I turned back to the mush that I was about to magically turn into bread. Too bad my lifeforce powers wouldn’t raise it up. That was what the yeast was for. “I’m sorry to hear it, Izzy. You worked so hard to injure yourself just to be around the woman.”

“There are plenty of other women out there.”

“I’m sure.”

He beamed while swiping the flour from the ground. “You ought to get that bread proofing if you want to make it in time.”

I could have punched him for being so annoying.

Leo grabbed the loaf pan before I got the chance to set it on the table. “Dear boy, have you no manners with your appetite?”

His giggles burst through the house as he sprinted for the kitchen. Truly, such energy couldn’t have existed in other creatures. Were all children this way?

Xavier appeared in the kitchen doorway holding up a glass pan. “Bread? Sweet! I made lasagna, so it’ll match perfectly.”

“Ah, then Izdor was right to recommend baking it.”

“Izdor was right, indeed.”

That gaze could have birthed new worlds. Touch alone would have done wonders, but his eyes were gifted in the art of enticement. I drifted over to him as if caught on a wire he had cast. With mechanical motions, I took the tray from him, not minding the heat, but alarming him as though I had receptors like he did.

“Galanthia.”

I boomed with laughter. “It’s fine!”

I placed the tray in the center of the tablecloth. Oranges dotted the polyester fabric with three brown placemats holding white plates and silverware. Three vases in total each held a daisy and baby’s breath tied with ribbon.

Leo patted the chair closest to the rear door. “This is your place, Galanthia.”

Xavier flushed scarlet while rubbing his elbow. That was becoming a bashful habit of his that made me want to embrace him. “He’s been waiting all night to show you that chair.”

“I picked the daisies too,” Leo stated proudly. “Do you like them? If you don’t, I can go get new ones.”

“These are darling flowers,” I praised. “Don’t disturb other flowers on my behalf. These are perfect.”

Leo brimmed with pride as he pulled out the chair for me.

“A gentleman,” I added. “Thank you, dear boy.”

He scooted into his chair next to me. “I’ve been practicing.”

“I think you’re doing quite well.”

Xavier draped his apron over the back of his chair that was situated across from me. He sat down and adjusted his plate, fixed the utensils, and played with his napkin. He was nervous like me.

What did he have to be nervous about? This was his home and his playground. Everything he knew about this place was from experience, while I was still learning. Feelings of displacement intensified as I watched him serve lasagna to each of us at the table with him being the very last to receive a piece.
