“You have multiple businesses and connections with the other islanders, some of which involve monetary transactions. If word gets out that you can’t even solve your own missing items problem…”

Oh, Pearl was being deliberate with the jab, but he ignored it and nodded. “We have transactions outside the island too. But yes, it needs to be resolved.”

“Who else knows other than the Lyras and the Council?”

“Just the Lyras and a few Council members. Not all of them.”

“Good.” She touched another sculpture. “Keep it that way.”

She closed her eyes, letting go of the sculpture and standing perfectly still. Seconds later, he felt a shift of energy in the air and watched as tendrils danced at her feet, a silvery hue that suited her persona. At the same time, the energy in the throne room responded, a standard red hue that was his family’s color. It crept around looking for the outsider. When it detected her, the energy thickened and rushed over, its eagerness making his hair stand on end.

Instinctively, he stepped forward to block it, but it forcibly pushed him away. He whirled to warn her and ended up gaping when she was faster, the silvery hue retreating inside her as she sidestepped the red. The red grasped the air, then went back to slumber. Pearl frowned at the ground, her cheeks pale.

“Am I to assume that you can’t turn this…energy off?”

“The house has been passed on for generations to the leader of the clan. So has the magic. It’s a collective energy, including mine. I can’t just turn it off.”

“Hmm. What’s behind that door?”

He glanced at the golden door located at the other end of the room.

“More treasures. The magical variety. Nothing’s been stolen in there.”

“I can feel its magic too. Stronger than the one here. It wants to murder me.”

She didn’t shudder as most people would have. Instead, she sighed, tapping his curiosity.

“You don’t mind?”

Pearl shot him a look. “Only an idiot wouldn’t mind the feeling of getting murdered. But I have felt worse.”

Your brotherwas at the tip of his tongue, but he held it off. “Do you have any more questions?”

Before she could answer, a cheerful voice popped in.

“Hello! What did I miss?”

Pearl swiveled to face Ryan, who only had eyes for her. Henry watched in astonishment as her challenging expression melted into a pleased one. Her smirk became bright and he could have sworn her eyes lit up.

“Hey, there, big boy. You look mighty fine today.”

“Thanks, Pearl.” Ryan blushed, just as pleased. “So do you.”

“It’s Miss Sutton,” Henry butted in.

“I asked him to call me Pearl,” she corrected, shifting her gaze toward him. The pleasantness dimmed. “Because we’re friends.”

Translation: Henry wasn’t her friend, which was just as well.

He gave her a look to relay that it wasn’t his business and he didn’t care. While most people would have kissed his ass already to try to get back in his good graces, Pearl was unfazed.

“Do you have any more questions?” he repeated.

“No. I know what to do.”

Again, she didn’t elaborate, and he was starting to realize that she wasn’t going to. “Would you care to share?”

“Potions. Let me brainstorm first and I will get back to you tomorrow.”
