Henry imagined throwing her to the ground, climbing on top of her, and doing the wildest, most wicked things. He imagined her body arching for him and her plea for him to hurry up in that impatient, smoky voice that was starting to drive him crazy every time he heard it. He imagined the magic surrounding them as they gave in to whatever was broiling between them, an attraction so strong that it was starting to blur every line. Would it feel this good to touch her beyond what he had already touched? Would it destroy them if he slipped inside her and fucked her until she was screaming his name?

“Henry?”

Her voice shook, just as it had in his fantasy. It took every ounce of his willpower to separate that fantasy from what was real and stop his groan at the next brush of their elbows. He felt weak from having to grapple with control so much. The magic turned off from hers, a natural fading that he followed. The rune lines died, but he could feel its shadows settling over the place, untouched by the red hue.

“It worked,” she whispered.

“You’re good with the potions thing.”

“And you’re good with connecting your energy to mine. This time, it feels more…”

Intimate. Because we had been intimate.

As if realizing where her mind was headed, she cleared her throat and didn’t finish her sentence. Instead, Pearl pushed off the ground first, breaking their minimal contact before he was even ready to let go of it. But Henry willed himself to acknowledge that it was for the best as he stood up, too, and faced her.

It’s just attraction. Get over it and move on.

She held out a palm.

“Your recording device. Hand it to me. I’ll fix it and set it up for you.”

“It’s in my bedroom.”

She waited him out until he went to retrieve it and returned to the throne room. When he placed it on her palm, their fingers brushed again and the sparks just kept coming. His jaw clenched.

“Here.”

“Thanks.”

Pearl casually pocketed it.

Henry didn’t say a word as she left that as her parting remark and walked away.

Chapter 9

The house became filled with green smoke and a nasty smell as soon as Pearl opened the lid to the cauldron, putting her in an even fouler mood than the one she was already in.

“What’s that concoction for?” Ruby asked. The orange-haired woman had been on the couch reading a book, but had wandered over as soon as the smoke show started.

“I don’t know anymore.”

Pearl slapped the lid back shut and let her energy loose until the liquid inside quieted down. While the smoke was still in the process of disappearing for good, Maddox slunk in, a brooding form with his nose wrinkled.

“What is that weird—”

“My failed potion, and I’m trying to get rid of it already,” Pearl snapped.

Maddox’s brows rose. “Failed potions are rare for you.”

“They’re rare for Sapphire, not me.”

“Your failed ones don’t smell like this,” Ruby pointed out. “Or act like this.”

“Where is this conversation going?” Pearl asked testily.

“Maybe you just need a break.”

Pearl opened her mouth, then realized that there was no sarcasm from Ruby. She slumped and pushed the cauldron aside, then let her energy fade. “Maybe I do need a break.”
