Pearl continued teasing herself, showing him the strokes she used. But as expected, it went nowhere beyond the electric charge. She resigned herself to that, wanting to get him hot and bothered quickly so he would jump her. Impatience rang in her bones when he was as unmoving as ever, even when a slightly more pleasant tingle had her moaning—

A blur surged before her, cutting off her sound and swamping her with anticipation. She braced for the kiss but was flabbergasted when his head didn’t even go anywhere near hers. Then he was transferring her to the counter and placing a kiss on her inner thigh, making it click what he was up to.

“Henry,” she called to him, her hands plucking on his hair. “There’s no need.”

But if Pearl was stubborn, so was he, and her words fell on deaf ears as his kisses trailed higher. A lick to her slit sent her body jerking as the steady electric pulse jumped, at the contact. His fingers nudged her wider while his hot breath inflicted havoc near her entrance.

“Relax. I’m pretty good at this.”

“Arrogant ass.”

Her eyes closed when his tongue delved in, her thoughts dissolving at the pleasure that curled inside her. When she closed her legs around him, he opened them back, then hooked both over his shoulders to give him better access. The confidence in how he handled her body stunned her, but at the same time, she couldn’t help surrendering to each lap, lick, and suck, knowing it would never be as good as this with anyone else.

Henry ate her up, no holds barred and no shame over it. He made her moan when he mirrored her strokes earlier, then made her bite back cry after cry when his fingers got involved. The combination of tongue, lips, and fingers nudged her higher and higher to the brink, faster than the last time he touched her like this.

“Let go, Pearl.”

But it was his voice, bare with need and asking her to trust him, that catapulted her to her climax.

Chapter 12

“Are you sure this is a good idea?”

“I’m not sure if it’s a good idea or not, but we have been sitting on our hands for days and it’s testing my patience. The longer the issue isn’t resolved, the longer all eyes will be on you…no, scratch that. On us. So, with all of that stacked against us, this idea is worth a try.”

Henry bit his tongue from pointing out that Pearl’s patience wasn’t that good to begin with, though it was commendable how she did manage to put a lid on it when it mattered the most. She was right, of course, and he knew he had to tuck his reluctance in.

“Okay. You managed to convince me. Let’s get on with it.”

She rolled her eyes but seemed pretty pleased with his response. When he noticed Martin lurking in the vicinity, he waved a hand, reading the worry easier now that he knew the butler was aware of his true nature. It was all about perspective, as the man who seemed to be always hovering and ready to report to Verity was actually a man hovering to keep a promise to Henry’s parents by protecting him.

Perspective played a role in Pearl’s plan, too, and he still couldn’t see her full vision, or understand her confidence. But he chose to trust, so he stepped forward until he was in the circle she drew. The symbols on it were unrecognizable, but Pearl was prepared for that, as the words flowed out of her smoothly.

“My siblings have a ton of sources from different parts of the Otherworld, but Ruby is different because she also has a ton of friends—and when I say friends, I mean she lent her services to very powerful creatures to fight equally powerful enemies, and these creatures don’t forget. She has a truckload of favors waiting to cash in, though she doesn’t like to abuse the power and is adamant about just using her magic to solve things.”

“And she cashed in now?”

“Yes, she did. These are ancient runes, born when we still weren’t born, and hidden from the world because of the effects they have.”

“What effects?”

White-gray eyes met his, not holding back. “They reveal a person’s true nature. Imagine a world where anyone could do that with a snap of their fingers. No secrets, no stones unturned. No illusion to hide in.”

He inwardly shuddered as it painted a picture of chaos and blood. But something felt off. “Why would you need to reveal my nature? You already know it.”

At her continuous gaze, it clicked.

“Go ahead,” she prompted. “Tell me your conclusion.”

“You think I have another nature. You think there’s something else that isn’t revealing itself.”

The shadow.

“It’s just a suspicion, but it’s a suspicion that keeps me up at night. All the information we have doesn’t connect them at all, but…do you ever get the feeling that your gut is telling you to keep looking in a specific direction?”

“Yes.”

And her gut was telling her to look in his direction. He tilted his head.
