“We have eyes on his office. We will get reports if Theo shows up or if the kids are spotted. Believe me, Kat, we’re on it.” I wanted to go with my guys, but I can’t leave without knowing Kat will be okay. Tyler leaving was one thing. He didn’t have to go far and it’s still on our property. I have to drive three fucking hours. It’s not happening until I truly know she’s in good shape.

“What about the house?” Oh shit. I never told her.

“Everything is cleared out,” I say, remembering the day I went there. There were no lingering smells to indicate that someone had been there recently.

“Wh . . . What do you mean everything was cleared out? My belongings?” Kat’s full focus is on me, but her gaze doesn’t scare me, it excites me.

“No, I mean the whole house is empty,” I say, running my finger down my knife.

“I checked on it, and there’s been no house listing. Theo still owns it,” Benji adds.

“Huh?” She’s looking at the table puzzled but says nothing else.

“I’m here!” Amara exclaims, Kat drags her eyes over to hers and a small smile appears on her face. She’s followed by Dr. Jones.

They smile and nod at us while Amara blurts out, “Honestly, Kat, why didn’t you call me?” Amara puts her hand on her hip. “I would’ve been there with you.” She would have been encouraging too, and if something much worse would have happened, she would’ve done anything to keep my mate alive.

“No, you would’ve called us, right Amara, if she tried doing anything foolish,” Ash scolds his long-time friend.

Amara simply ignores him. “Let’s get you checked out. We’ll go to the room where Benji and Tyler stayed before they were taken to the hospital.”

Kat cringes like she’s trying to forget when Benji and Tyler almost died. I am too. I still can’t shake the feeling that I almost lost my brothers. I don’t know what I would’ve done without them.

We get up from the dining table and make our way across the hall. Ash opens the room. “Sit,” he tells Kat. She glares at him before she rests in one of the beds.

The smell of alcohol is strong in this room, and it’s always sterile. It always messes with my nose and makes me want to sneeze, but I hold it in. I stand in the corner of the room. This is a better vantage point where I can see everyone without people realizing I’m here.

Benji sits behind her while Tyler stands next to the bed.

“I’m fine,” she tells Doctor Jones. “They’re just making a big deal out of nothing.” Her violet eyes get brighter.

“She’s fine. You guys are just making a big deal out of nothing,” the doctor says, repeating exactly what she said. I look at his eyes, and they are glazed over. I look at Kat’s and they’re more vibrant than they were just a second ago.

“Shit!” Amara says as she leans against the wall and watches in awe, then quickly looks away with slight fear.

“Now we know the reason why her kind was hunted.” Ash watches her intently. He’s sitting on the chair on the opposite side of her. “I’ve seen her do it to Dante. There was so much going on that night, I just didn’t process what really happened.” He looks her dead in the eyes. He isn’t afraid of her power. I look at my brothers and none of them are anxious.

I grab my knife from my pocket and twirl it around as I walk toward my mate. I don’t want her to think I’m frightened. I want her to know that I support her. Well, not what she did to Doc exactly, but then again, she has no idea what she just did.

“She was only able to do it when her emotions were heightened and that was only because she turned into a wolf. The shifter magic was trying to let this magic out.” Amara’s voice is in awe. She’s still not looking directly at her friend but she can’t help but be impressed.

I stand next to Ash and gently say, “Release the doc.”

She turns her eyes over to me. “No.”

She doesn’t know she’s doing it. “Az, leave me alone.” I feel the pulse of her power, and I want to comply.

“She’s like a vampire who lures victims but, instead of humans, she can lure supernaturals. And that’s what makes her dangerous,” Amara continues, her voice full of curiosity and excitement. “I bet this is the reason Krissy wanted Kat so badly. She knew about her power and wanted to take it like she did the power of our ancestors, like she did to you guys. With all the magic that was inside of her, this was the only one that she truly wanted. The control of other supernaturals. It’s a dangerous power to have.”

“Katarina, release the doc.” She turns her eyes over to Ash.

“No.” She crosses her arms.

“How are you resisting it?” Amara questions us.

“I feel the pull, and it tries to grab me, but it can’t quite grasp me,” I answer.

“Maybe it has to do with us being her mates.” Benji grabs her waist and her body sags against his.
