But he was enamored, more than he liked. It was as if Sonny had some kind of hold over him, and not for the first time he wondered if the human could be his mate. That was the only explanation for why he couldn’t stop thinking of Sonny. He couldn’t stop imagining every position he could take him. He thought of how Sonny laughed, his smile, his wit, and how fucking gorgeous he was.

Or it’s insanity setting in.

When they reached Sonny’s room, Sonny slammed the door behind Amon as he walked in. “What happened with Slater?”

“I didn’t kill him,” Amon stated.

Sonny crossed his arms. “I’ll need you to elaborate. What happened?”

“I found him in a bar, followed him outside, and told him to stay away from you.” That was all Sonny needed to know. He didn’t need details about how hard it was for Amon not to kill the son of a bitch or how he imagined tearing his throat out or gutting him.

“It didn’t work.” Sonny told him about Slater rolling slowly by the taco joint. Amon gritted his teeth as visions of him snapping Slater’s neck entered his mind.

“Another thing…” Sonny asked him about Zakrem, a subject Amon never wanted to talk about. Zakem had been unstable at best, had killed humans for the sheer joy of killing them, and had been a pain in the ass to live with, always trying to intimidate others in the coven. But he’d been Eleazar’s brother, and Amon hated to see Eleazar suffer so greatly after he killed Zakrem.

That had been the only time since joining the coven that he’d shed a tear. It was hard not to when Eleazar had wailed at the loss, had lashed out after what he’d done, even if Zakrem deserved to be put down.

The mournful cries would have made anyone with a heart shed tears.

“It’s true and never to be spoken of again,” Amon said.

Sonny fell silent, as if dealing with the truth of what Eleazar had done.

“Okay, I won’t bring it up again.” Sonny sat on his bed, and Amon had to hold back, had to stop himself from laying the guy out on the covers and sampling every inch of his perfect body.

Instead, Amon took a step back. “I need to take care of a few things.”

More like get away from Sonny. The human’s arousal was driving Amon crazy. His cock was stirring, and if he didn’t leave, his problem would be evident.

“You have to go?” Sonny asked as he stood.

“Yes.” Amon turned and opened the door. “I’ll have Isaak look after you if you need to clean or anything else.”

With that, Amon left Sonny’s bedroom, closing the door behind him and breathing in air that didn’t contain the human’s scent.

Stone eased close to his back door and looked out, but he didn’t see anything, yet his senses were on high alert. Loki was at his side, his pit bull whimpering. Stone patted Loki’s head, reassuring his dog that he was safe and that Stone wouldn’t let anything happen to him.

Loki had been a rescue, a stray who’d wandered into Stone’s yard, emaciated and terrified, even growling at Stone. It had taken weeks of leaving food out and slowly gaining Loki’s trust. Now the dog was Stone’s best friend, and Stone would put a world of hurt on anyone who thought to harm the dog.

“Stay here,” Stone said to Loki as he eased the back door open. He sniffed the air but didn’t find any strange scents, like someone who shouldn’t be there.

Stone stepped into his backyard, scanning the area for any sign of danger. His instincts told him that something was off, that there was something to be cautious of, but he couldn’t see anything out of the ordinary.

He reached for the gun he kept in the back of his waistband, just in case, and slowly made his way out into the night.

It was quiet, too quiet for comfort. The only sound was the chirping of crickets and the rustling of leaves as a gentle breeze blew through. Stone walked around the perimeter of his property, his senses on high alert.

That was when he heard it. The sound of footsteps crunching on the gravel path that led to his house. He stopped in his tracks, listening intently. The footsteps were getting closer.

Stone crouched down behind a bush, gun ready in his hand. He watched and waited. The footsteps grew louder, and he could hear the sound of breathing, heavy and labored.

As soon as the footsteps were close enough, Stone stood to his full height and came up behind the stranger. He slipped his arm around the guy’s neck, applying just enough pressure to show he meant business.

“Who in the fuck are you, and why are you creeping around my backyard?” Stone pressed the barrel of the gun against the guy’s temple.

“I don’t believe in the cause enough to die,” the man whimpered. “I was sent to gather intel on you.”
