Sonny’s heart immediately started pounding wildly in his chest. He tried to ignore the fear building inside of him because wolf shifters, along with vampires, could scent fear, and Stone more than likely could hear Sonny’s heart beating like crazy.

That was one thing he hated about preternatural. It was hard to hide your emotions around them. “How could you benefit from that kind of information?”

Sonny wanted to remain vague, but they both knew that Stone wasn’t an idiot. His eyes were too sharp and observant. He was too intelligent to think that Andrew—who was still very skinny except for his bulging belly—was simply gaining weight. Honestly, Sonny was just glad he hadn’t gotten pregnant when he’d mated Amon.

Zach hadn’t either when he’d mated Shayde.

It was something that had only happened to Andrew, thank god. But Sonny worked around the estate, and most vampires ignored him, as if he wasn’t even there. He’d heard them talk about how it was impossible, even though the proof was right there in front of them.

So Sonny knew it wasn’t common for a vampire to knock a guy up. If he were Stone, Sonny would be downright curious, too.

“If you think I’d used that information as a weapon, you’re wrong,” Stone said. “I just want to know how in the hell that’s possible.”

Sonny still wasn’t admitting to a damn thing. Stone could kick him out right now. Sonny would get out of the truck before he spilled coven secrets. More like Eleazar’s secrets, because Sonny still didn’t trust most of the vampires at the estate and couldn’t have cared less about their secrets.

“I told you that Andrew is just gaining weight.” Sonny waved a hand toward the steering wheel. “Are we going, or should I walk?”

With what sounded like a frustrated growl, Stone pulled away from the curb, keeping his questions to himself for the rest of their time together. As they drove, Sonny was relieved that Stone hadn’t pressed him further. He knew he was a terrible liar and had been worried that his fear would give him away. But he couldn’t let Stone or anyone else know the truth about Andrew’s pregnancy.

If word got out, Eleazar’s enemies would have leverage, and that was the last thing any of them wanted. Even though Stone swore he wouldn’t use the knowledge as a weapon, Sonny trusted no one.

They arrived at the dry cleaners first. Sonny got out of the truck and walked in, greeted by the familiar scent of dry-cleaning solvent. He approached the counter and handed over the garments that needed to be cleaned. As Franny began to type in the information, he noticed how she kept stealing glances at him.

Since Sonny had started working for Eleazar, this was the place he’d always brought the suits to. He and Franny had gotten to know each other, and although she wasn’t an outgoing person, she seemed… Sonny wasn’t sure what to think. She was more quiet than usual, and the way she kept looking at him had him uneasy.

“Is something wrong?” he asked.

She quickly shook her head. “I was moving something in the storage room, but it was too heavy, and now my back aches.”

Sonny frowned. “Do you still need help?” he asked. “I’m not muscular, but I could give it a try.”

Franny’s face lit up. “Could you? Since I’m here by myself today, I thought for sure I was going to throw my back out moving the dang box.”

Sonny smiled. “I’d be delighted to help.”

“This way.” She waved for him to come around the counter and follow her behind the garment conveyor. Sonny had a wild urge to ask if he could play with the button to make the clothes go around and around but refrained.

“You’re saving my back,” Franny said. “I really appreciate this.”

“No problem.” Maybe he should have gotten Stone to do the heavy lifting, because Sonny wasn’t much bigger than Franny, who was skinny and small. If the box felt too heavy, he’d make Stone help. The guy was seated in his truck, parked right in front of the door, but when Sonny glanced back, Stone was looking at something on his phone.

Franny opened the storage room door. There were boxes stacked, and he assumed they were filled with the plastic used to cover garments.

“Which box do you need moved?”

Franny turned to face him, and Sonny was taken aback at the pure hatred in her eyes. Without looking away, she opened the door that led to the back alley, and in walked Slater.

When Sonny spun and tried to run, Slater grabbed him by the back of his hair and yanked so hard that Sonny felt hairs being pulled out. “Oh no you don’t.”

“You should be ashamed of yourself,” Franny spat. “Working for vampires. Had I known before now, I would have refused you service.”

Sonny knew he wasn’t getting away from Slater, but he kicked his foot out as hard as he could and nailed Franny in the chest. She fell backward, stumbling into the stack of boxes, and they crumpled down around her.

“Bitch!” Sonny tried to lunge at her, but Slater was already hauling him out the door. He opened his mouth to scream—which was what he should have done first—but Slater shoved some kind of cloth in Sonny’s mouth and slapped a piece of tape over it.

Sonny twisted and elbowed, kicked and tried to head butt, but Slater avoided every attempt. Then someone got out of the car and popped the trunk.

Oh hell no! Sonny really fought then, but Slater dumped him inside and slammed the lid closed, almost taking off Sonny’s foot in the process. A second later, the car was moving, and Sonny wondered if he would make it out of this alive.
