“Well, we’ll see you in there,” I mutter, not making eye contact with Clay or his date.

Positioning the popcorn under my arm, I take my son’s hand and pull him toward the entrance to our theater.

The entire time, my mind is reeling. Just as we take our seats in rowP, I glance up to see Clay as he enters, our eyes meeting for a split second.

Why him?I’ve never once run into anyone from the club in public. Of course, out of everyone, it had to be him.

Rule #4: If you ask the question, be ready for the answer.

I’m not an idiot. I can spot an awkward ex-girlfriend encounter from a mile away.

The way they kept glancing at each other throughout the movie—it wasobvious.

Clay is strangely quiet on the entire drive to his place, so I decide to attack the awkwardness head-on.

“Who was that woman?” I ask, turning toward him.

“What woman?” he replies, making me roll my eyes.

“The beautiful one with the black hair and the little boy. There was clearly some tension between you two. You knew her name.”

He spins his head in my direction. He clearly didn’t think I heard that part, but I did.

“Babe, relax,” I say, reaching across the center console to rub a hand up his leg. “I’m not the jealous type. I promise.”

“Then why does it matter?” he asks, turning his attention back to the road.

I settle back into my seat and stare straight ahead. “Because you’re clearly caught up on it. You’ve been weird ever since. I figure I have the right to know why a complete stranger is ruining my night with my boyfriend.”

“Who says she’s ruining our night? I’m not caught up on it.”

My brow furrows. “Don’t get defensive. I hate that.”

He scoffs and looks back toward the road. “So what, you want me to tell you the dirty details?”

“Are there dirty details?”

“I thought you didn’t get jealous,” he responds, looking at me with a crooked grin.

“Are you kidding? Jealous?” I laugh. “I might be turned on.”

With a shake of his head, he lets out an awkward chuckle as he pulls into the parking lot of his apartment building. After putting the car into park, he turns toward me, running his thumb along my jaw.

“You really want to ruin our night with talk about my ex?”

“So she is an ex,” I exclaim. “I knew it.”

Leaning back, he runs his hands through his hair. “Technically, no.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

His head flops in my direction. “It means it’s complicated.”

Then he reaches for the door handle and opens it without another word. Even after he climbs out, I’m stuck in some motionless trance. “Come on, babe,” he calls.

Clay and I have been seeing each other for five months now, and everything with him has felt so right the entire time. But there is this part of him I can tell he’s holding back from me. Not that I think a person has to reveal everything to the person they’re seeing after only five months, but I’m not asking for deep, dark secrets here.
