Please.

My phone goes silent for a few minutes. I’m sitting in the parking lot of the local market, waiting for her reply. I don’t know why I’m suddenly so eager to help her, but I am. Maybe because this was the version of Eden I wanted months ago. And it really does have nothing to do with sex—something even I’m surprised by.

The old me didn’t give a shit about kids. And to be honest, this is the only one I do give a shit about. Maybe it’s because he’s her kid or because he seems to really like me for some reason. But this sudden, unexplainable need to be there for him is nothing like I’ve felt before.

For the first time in my life, I have someone else to care about other than myself.

1024 E. Barclay Dr.

My mouth stretches into a wide grin as I stare down at the address on my phone. Without responding, I quickly jump out of the car and walk into the store.

The basket is already full under my arm before I even reach the Popsicles in the frozen section. I grab every snack that looks like something a kid would like. Then I pick up four different brands of children’s fever reducer, just in case.

I’m loading up three heavy bags into my car when I feel my phone buzzing in my back pocket. After slamming the trunk, I pull it out and feel the heavy weight of shame when I see Jade’s name on the screen.

Why do I feel bad? I’m just taking some groceries to her house, to myex-girlfriend’shouse. Who Jade thinks is just my ex-Domme and has no idea how much really happened between Eden and me.

Fuck.

“Hello?” I say as I answer the call.

“Hey,” she replies in a chipper tone.

“How’s the day with your dad going?” I ask as I slide into the driver’s seat of my car.

“Good. It’s a beautiful day for a boat ride. Too bad you couldn’t come.”

“I know, baby. But you’re the one who wanted to wait to tell him, remember?”

She lets out a huff. “Yes. I know. I do love sneaking around, but I’d also like to just be together out in the open too. Then he’d invite you on the boat and over for barbecues. It would be fun.”

“Yeah…it would. Hey, where is he anyway? You didn’t throw him overboard just to call me, did you?”

She chuckles into the phone. “No. We haven’t left yet. I’m grabbing food, and he’s getting the boat ready.”

“Be careful,” I say.

“I will,” she replies. I start the car, putting it into reverse as the Bluetooth picks up the call so I don’t have to hold my phone. “What are you doing today?” she asks, and I pause.

I don’t want to lie to Jade. Ican’tlie to her. At least not any more than I already have. Things have been so good, and I actuallydon’tfeel like the piece of shit I used to feel like. Besides, I’m not cheating on her. And I don’t plan on cheating on her. So what am I so afraid of?

I clear my throat as I continue pulling out of the parking spot. “Jack is sick.”

“Oh no,” she replies without hesitation.

“I’m taking some groceries over to them. I just want to help out.”

There’s a beat of silence on the line, and I find myself wincing as I wait for her to respond.

Jade might be a saint, but I just admitted that I’m going over to the house of the woman who had my cock down her throat less than twenty-four hours ago. No one in their right mind would just be okay with that.

“That’s nice of you,” she murmurs.

“You’re not…mad?”

More hesitation.

“A little jealous,” she replies with a forced laugh. “But not mad.”
