“Liv, don’t agree so fast. This might be the end of my career and you’re going to have to decide if you really want a future with a washed out hockey player.”

I leaned in close, planted a hard kiss on his mouth and looked him straight in the eye. “Your dick still works, doesn’t it?”

“Are you sure this is smart?” Wendy asked, as she threw open the passenger side door. I tossed my crutches in the back seat of her Jeep and hauled my ass inside.

“Doc says I can put weight on it,” I said.

What I couldn’t do was drive. Which was why my sister was here pulling chauffeur duty. She came for all my doctor’s appointments, and all she asked for in payment was for me to get the entire team to celebrate in her bar if we ever won the Stanley Cup.

“That is a ridiculous thing to ask for,” I’d told her when she asked.

“It’s epic,” she’d said. “It will be a party that will go down in the history books of Calico Cove and I want it at the Gull.”

“It might not happen,” I’d told her.

“Oh ye of little faith.”

So, yeah, somehow the women in my life had all the faith in the world when it came to me. And I did hate disappointing the women in my life.

“That doesn’t mean this is smart,” she said, climbing in the driver’s seat. She turned the ignition and we both shivered until the car’s heat kicked in. My phone binged.

Liv: You need to eat prunes. I read that a lot of people recovering from surgery don’t move enough so they tend to get constipated. Prunes will help.

“You know every time she texts, you get this shit eating grin on your face,” Wendy said like it bothered her. And maybe it did. But I couldn’t stop.

“She’s worried I’m constipated.”

“You guys are gross.”

Wendy put the Jeep in gear and drove away from the doctor’s office. After the surgery, she’d wanted me to come to Calico Cove to recuperate so she could take care of me, but that house was nothing but stairs.

Liv wanted to take a leave of absence from her job so she could come down and take care of me. But there was no way I was asking her to give up her amazing job with people who valued and respected her, just to help me get back and forth to the bathroom.

No way.

Besides, I wasn’t a good patient, I knew that. I was scared shitless that this was the end of my career and I didn’t want to be an asshole to the two most important people in my life.

So instead, I let Novek come over and stay with me at my penthouse to help me to the bathroom when I needed it. I bitched at him that my cast itched and he called me names in his native language and I wondered how this guy ended up being the one I could count on.

Liv drove down to Maine whenever she could take the time. Mostly when the Voyageurs played out of town and on weekends. We watched TV and talked hockey. She made buckets of soup that she said I could freeze and I tried my level best to get her naked.

Except she told me it was against doctor’s orders. The sex part, not her getting naked, but she didn’t want to be a tease.

But the doctor gave me the all-clear this morning to put some weight on my leg and I felt the bone deep longing for my girl.My girl.

“Where am I taking you, Dillon?” Wendy asked me, stirring me out of my thoughts.

“Oh, sis. I think you know.” I’d asked her to bring her passport, after all.

“Montreal? Really? It’s going to cost you.”

“Whatever the price, I’ll pay it.”
