I walked by Dillon’s Bronco and felt myself flush.

Ridiculous. That just knowing he was in the building was enough to rattle me.

My office was at the end of a long hallway and down a flight of steps. It had, quite obviously, been a windowless storage room hastily made into an office with a too big desk and an office chair with a squeaky wheel.

Joyce, who worked the front office, had been very apologetic when she walked me down this long hallway my first day. Apparently, another assistant coach had claimed the skating coach’s old office and since I was only temporary, she was really hoping this was okay.

I assured Joyce it was all right, while secretly delighted I had an office at all.

Today’s workout was going to be a risk, but if I played my cards right, the payoff would be extraordinary. These long shot odds were like candy to me. I couldn’t get enough. Taking the easy way was not my style.

I found the things that were hard, and I made them my bitch.

Wondering if I should have brought a few tutus, I opened my door and got smacked in the face with an overpowering stench.

Corn chips.

Not the good kind.

The sweaty, disgusting hockey gear kind.

My desk and my chair were covered in thirty pairs of used professional hockey gloves.

Lovely.

Solid prank. But I wouldn’t give it more than a B- for creativity.

The guys must have told the equipment manager to dump yesterday’s gloves in my office instead of taking them to the drying room where they were cleaned and left on racks to dry.

“Having a problem with your office there, Coach?”

I turned to find Novek, wearing a pair of bright red Jordans and again with the fanny pack. His mullet was in top form..

Yesterday he’d come out of the PT room and run right into me. I’d nearly bounced back three feet. He didn’t apologize, he just smiled that gold tooth smile and walked away. Jennifer, one of the trainers, just rolled her eyes and mouthedbabybehind his back.

The assessment was spot on.

“Nope.” I said, not giving him the satisfaction. “Perfectly fine. Why would I think there was a problem?”

I had to breathe through my mouth and not my nose.

He leaned forward, looking at my desk and all the gloves. “Oh,” he feigned innocence. “How did those get there?”

“No idea,” I said.

“You’re not auctioning those off are you? Because that would get you in trouble.”

Yeah, suddenly this prank didn’t seem so innocent.

“Nope. No plans for that,” I said.

“It isn’t some kinky sex thing, is it?” He asked, leaning forward. I stepped back. “Because there are easier ways to get into my gear…”

I leaned forward too, baring my teeth. “Not. On. Your. Life.”

“Novek!” It was Dillon at the end of the hall, looking like an angry Hulk. “You’re late for the team meeting.”

“Coming Cap,” Novek said, and strolled away.
