“Yes!” Dillon shouted, his head tilted back like he’d just won a playoff game. “I win. You lose! Finally! Victory is mine! Nick, that’s your name right? Bring me the finest prizes in all the land.”

“Uh, you only won once, so that just gets you another turn,” Nick explained. “You have to build points.”

I smiled triumphantly. “Yes, Nick. Tell the man how many points I’ve won.”

“She’s up to twenty-five. Here’s the list of things you can get,” he said, and handed me a paper flyer.

“Hmm,” I said, perusing the list. “Let’s see. So many options to choose from. A pick two of anything from Bobbette and Bell. A lunch special at Pappa’s Diner. The aura reading by Madame Za… I have to admit that’s kind of what I was playing for.”

Dillon scowled at me. “You don’t want that one.”

“Yeah, he’s right,” Nick agreed.

“Why not? It sounds fun.”

“Well, it’s just sometimes, Madame Za…she can beright,” Nick said cautiously. “If you know what I mean.”

“I have no idea what you mean,” I said.

“Mostly, she’s wrong,” Dillon said. “But when she’s right, she’ll change your whole life.”

“Sometimes she knows when you’re calling from jail,” Nick said.

“Hookay,” I said, glancing between the young man and the man I wasn’t supposed to be speaking to. “Can I have my tickets, Nick? I think I’m ready to try another game.”

Nick handed me a line of red tickets, showcasing my incredible water balloon clown game skill, and I shoved them in my back pocket ready to move on to the next event.

Dillon fell into step beside me. I ignored him.

“Liv.”

I didn’t stop walking.

“Liv.”

Nope. Kept going.

“Liv!”

I turned around to shush him.

“Don’t make a scene,” I hissed. “Do you want people to think we’re here together?”

He caught up to me in three ridiculously easy strides.

“You’re mad,” he said.

“You’re a genius.”

He grabbed my arm and pulled me between an apple cider booth and a craft booth where little kids were making corn husk dolls. “I wasn’t going to come,” he said, and I tried to shake him off, but he held tight. “But I couldn’t stay away.”

“That’s not the compliment you think it is.”

“I don’t know what to do!” He cried, and he looked so upset I almost took pity on him. “It is such a bad idea for us to be together, but you are all I can think about.”

I swallowed but kept my mouth shut.

“I know I’ve been an ass the last week, but…I have to choose the team. You get that, right?”
