There were seven other teams on the field which was situated in the center of the town square.

Bobby and Mari, Wendy and Dave. Annie and her new boyfriend Levi.

I didn’t know Levi’s deal, but Annie had two left feet on her best day.

Jackson had teamed up with Roy since Lola was pregnant, and Vanessa had just had a baby. Those two had me a little worried, but Roy was not a team player in any situation and already looked extremely unhappy being tied together with his brother-in-law.

Vanessa snapped a picture of them and Roy immediately untied himself, grabbed his daughter Nora and walked off.

I looked around for Matt Sullivan. There was a time back in high school, when he and Carrie Piedmont would win this race every year, no questions asked.

Of course, that was back when they’d been in total sync with each other.

I spotted him at the finish line standing next to someone who looked a lot like…

“Holy shit, is that Carrie Piedmont?” Liv asked. “She looks…different.”

Different was one way of saying it.

Her famous red hair was chopped into an uneven bob. Was that a Hollywood thing?

“What is she wearing?” Olivia asked.

“Crocs.”

“And like a…”

“Grandma’s house coat?”

“That can’t be her,” Liv said, and I would have agreed with her until the red-head caught my eye and waved.

“You’ll never beat our record, Heart!” She shouted.

“Why aren’t you racing?” I shouted back. Beside her Matt Sullivan went bright red, which was weird. Carrie said something to Matt, who shook his head. Carrie said something else and he shook his head again. Carrie stormed off.

“Giving you a shot!” Matt finally answered, and then walked in the opposite direction as Carrie.

Carrie and Matt only proved my point. Love built on chemistry wasn’t something that lasted.

Love was a decision you made when you were ready and committed to starting a partnership together.

A family together.

Love was going to happen for me in my late thirties. When my career was over. When I could dedicate the time to being a lover, partner and friend.

“Hey Sheriff! Just checking, when we whizz by you, you won’t give us a speeding ticket, will you?” Liv called out to Bobby.

No. No way was love happening now.

“Hey, wait a minute, Heart, did you bring a ringer?” Mari asked, pulling a pencil out of the bun at the back of her head as well as a plastic pumpkin cake decorator. She looked around for someplace to put them, didn’t find one, and so tucked them back in her hair.

“Not a ringer,” Liv shouted. “Just someone who plans to run rings around all of you.”

“Can you back up all this smack talk?” I asked my partner in crime.

She shrugged. “I can. Can you?”

“Just don’t slow me down,” I told her, as I wrapped an arm around her waist and felt her do the same.
