I fucking hated the idea of her driving away all by herself to start a new life someplace else.

Without me.

Montreal was six and a half hours away. Once the season was over maybe we could meet in Calico Cove. Better yet…

Holy shit. A lightning bolt of an idea came to me.

I opened up Google to check the Bruisers’ schedule this season.

Bingo. Early November. Away game in Montreal.

Maybe we could do this long-distance. She would have her life and her career and I could have mine. When our schedules worked out we could see each other. No pressure. No compromises. No commitment.

Not that I was asking her to be my long-distance, low-commitment casual girlfriend or anything. Dudes had to be careful about that shit now.

No, this was just an opportunity to see her again. Maybe. If she got the job. Who was I kidding? She would get the job. I opened my phone to text Coach Renaud, who I once played for in the minors, to give her a glowing recommendation.

But I didn’t.

She’d hate it if I meddled.

I put my phone in my pocket with a smile on my face.

I didn’t have to choose the team over her. I didn’t have to choose anything, I could just let it all happen.

Later That Afternoon

Liv

“You ready to leave?”

“Oh my god, Dillon, you startled me.” I looked up from my computer, surprised to see it was after five in the afternoon. It had been a long day and tomorrow would be another one.

I was meeting Novek again, hopefully at six am, this time. If I was being honest with myself, I was excited. Away from all the other guys, he dropped his guard and actually wasn’t an asshole. He was also an exceptional student. He’d made big improvements with just a few corrections.

“Hey, how was Novek today?” I asked.

Dillon’s eyebrows went up. “Weird, actually.”

“What do you mean?”

“Smith told a dumb sexist joke in the locker room and Novek called him out on it. And he actually wanted to work on passing drills.”

“I think he’s trying to be a team player,” I said.

“I’m not holding my breath,” Dillon said. “But it would be amazing if he was. Now, you ready to go?”

“Go where?”

He looked around the hallway before stepping into the office and closing the door.

“Back to my place. You left a car there, if I remember correctly.”

Right. The car. I’d planned to take an Uber back to his place. I wasn’t going to be so stubborn that I didn’t text him and ask him for a jump – battery jump only. But I hadn’t thought about driving back there with him.

“You didn’t have to wait around for me,” I said.
