“You’re just jealous you were left with your own right-hand last night.” I laugh. “How’s that working out for you?”

Suddenly, Reid surges to his feet and steps right in front of me.

His eyes bore into mine as his jaw continues to tick in frustration.

“Get your fucking head on straight.” He growls. “She’s not a fucking sex doll, and we’ve got other shit to be focusing on right now.”

My mind shoots back to everything he explained to Mav and me after he put Alana to bed. About his friend Aubrey going to get some intel straight from the horse’s mouth and what Griff said about Luciana Rivera. That little nugget of intel is still making my head spin. But I’m all for it if it helps us move on sooner rather than later.

Every day that passes, we’re at risk of Victor finding out that Reid’s been going behind his back. And the second he does, we’re going to need one eye over our shoulders at all times.

That cunt won’t spare any of us a chance to beg for our lives—not that we would, of course, that’s not how Hawks roll—he doesn’t care who’s at the end of his gun.

“I’m focused, man. I’m fucking ready for it.”

He searches my eyes. I know exactly what he’s looking for, and I’m afraid that he might just find it.

“You should consider taking your meds,” he says quietly. His words are like a knife through my chest, forcing all the air from my lungs.

I get it. I know why he thinks it would probably be a good idea right now.

But fuck that.

He isn’t the one who has to take them. To have his entire life dulled to gray.

Yeah, cycling through my own misery and issues isn’t fun when I embark on that dark road. But fuck having my entire life dulled because something might happen one day that sends me back there. When it happens, I’ll deal. Just like I did last week when I had a slip.

“I’ve got this. I’m here and I’m ready.’

“J.” He sighs.

“I know,” I assure him. “I know how this is going to end, and I’m prepared.”

One of his brows quirks in a silent, ‘are you?’

“Trust me, yeah. No motherfucker out there is bringing us down. Not your cunt of a father and not that hot little blonde in your kitchen.”

“Yeah,” he says, reaching up to scratch the back of his neck before he turns toward the door, the scent of coffee luring him away. “But what if they do?” he says so quietly, I don’t think I’m meant to hear, but I do.

Unease trickles through me at his lack of confidence, but I refuse to allow it to take hold.

We’ve got this. We’re going to win.

We have to believe that or all of this, everything we’ve been working toward, has been for nothing.

When I finally join the three of them in the kitchen, Mav and Alana are cuddled up on the couch, Reid is resting his ass back against the counter, sipping his mug of lava, pretending he’s not watching the happy couple, and there is a fourth mug waiting for me.

“So what delights does today hold, Boss?” I ask him, smirking when he realizes he’s been caught perving.

“I’m going to see if I can make contact with Luciana,” he states.

“Luciana?” Alana echoes, letting us know she’s listening.

Mav turns to her and whispers something in her ear.

“Rivera?” She gasps. “They’re like… the cartel. They’re… dangerous.”

“Baby, look around you,” I say, holding my arms out from my sides. “We’re all fucking dangerous.”But no one in the room wields her power like you do, little dove. You have no idea, but you’re the most dangerous out of all of us.
