“Where we left off? You mean before you tried to kill me?”

“There was no attempt on your life. Not yet at least.”

“Yeah, I told JD that I knew it was an accident. Death by prawn isn’t really your style.”

“You should have told us.”

“Or maybe you should have given me a heads up about the ingredients of the curry.”

I glare at her.

“Would have saved a lot of drama, don’t you think?”

“Yeah, like having JD sleeping outside my bedroom door.” My words sound innocent enough, but inside, I’m like a coiled spring, worried over his state of mind.

“Not my fault he can’t accept the fallout of his actions.”

“What did he do?” I ask, assuming I’ve missed something.

She laughs and shakes her head. “Don’t play the innocent. You’re just as guilty as him. And I thought playground games would be beneath you.”

“I guess it all depends on the prize, don’t you think?” I taunt.

“I suppose. But it doesn’t really matter in this case, seeing as you lost. Not that it was ever going to go another way, you were betting on who’d fuck me first.”

I can’t help but laugh.

"What?” she balks.

“I hate to break it to you, Pet. But I never would have won that bet.”

“O-oh,” she sings, looking at me through her lashes. “I guess that explains your closeness and why you were so against him touching me. Silly me.”

My brows pinch.

“How long have you been in love with your best friend for exactly?”

“What?” I blurt, successfully spraying my chest and legs with coffee.

“It’s okay, Big Man. Your secret is safe with me.”

“I don’t fucking want JD. Jesus, Pet.”

“Shame. With all that time alone I had down there, I’d come up with some pretty epic fantasies,” she muses, sipping her coffee.

“Glad to know you were productive with your time.”

“I had to keep myself entertained somehow. But you’d know that, wouldn’t you? You were watching.”

I don’t respond or react.

“You watched him win too, didn’t you? Even after you told him not to touch me. That must have stung. Your right-hand man defying your orders. That’s not how the mighty Reid Harris should be running his empire.”

“Oh, so you’re agreeing that it’s my empire now?”

“Nope, just stroking your ego, Big Man.”

“You’re a pain in the ass.”
