Maybe.

“I think that maybe we’re searching for the same end goal here,” he finally confesses.

“Oh yeah? How so?”

“Give me names, Alana,” he demands, his voice cold and dark. “Prove to me that you’re with me, not against me, and I’ll do everything I can to make your dreams come true.”

“You’re going to buy me a house on the beach so my husband and I can grow old together?” I taunt.

His jaw ticks in irritation.

“Don’t play games with me, Pet,” he warns, his deep, raspy voice sending a shiver racing down my spine.

“I don’t know what you want me to say.”

“I want the truth,” he roars, his patience with me finally running out.

“So you believe we’re not after you now? What did I do to convince you that you’ve never been anything significant enough in my life to waste time on?”

His teeth grind with irritation, but he doesn’t respond.

“Must hurt to know that someone in this town doesn’t worship you like a god. Your poor ego, how will it ever cope.”

“Enough,” he snaps, surging forward.

I brace myself for what’s to come. But I don’t flinch or cower. Years of being at the wrong end of a man’s anger means I continue to sit there, ready to take it like the strong, unbreakable woman I am.

But he doesn’t get close or even attempt to reach for me.

“How about,” I say, uncurling my legs and pushing to stand. I abandon my mug on the coffee table and stalk closer to him.

He leans back against the couch as I close in, keeping his eyes on mine.

“How about you tell me your plan and then I’ll decide if you need my secrets,” I offer.

“That’s not how this works, Pet,” he warns through gritted teeth.

“You’re wrong,” I state, stepping confidently between his spread thighs. “That’s how you think it works. You might be used to your little foot soldiers stepping into line the second you open your mouth, but I’m not one of them.”

“Don’t I know it,” he mutters under his breath.

Leaning forward, I press my hands onto the back of the couch on either side of his head.

If I thought his almost naked presence was unignorable before then add his manly, rich scent to the mix and it becomes almost overwhelming.

A surge of power coils and explodes inside me. I can’t imagine there have been many people over the years who’ve had the mighty Reid Harris beneath them like this.

My heart pounds so hard it makes my head spin as he allows me to continue staring down at him.

“I don’t care who you are, how dangerous you are, how many men you’ve killed, you don’t deserve my secrets.”

He smirks, totally unfazed by our position. “And what if I already know them,” he taunts.

The image of my notebook left abandoned in my cell flashes behind my eyes and my stomach knots.

He wouldn’t…

Who the fuck am I kidding, of course he fucking would.
