I scoot back and rest against the foot of the bed, my eyes on the screen as my brain spins at a million miles a second.

Reid has called me the missing piece to a puzzle. Clearly, he has an agenda here. He needs me for something. Something important.

With my eyes locked on the screen, hope begins to bloom inside me, the petals uncurling like a rose on a summer morning.

Could we all want the same thing?

The realization hits me with the force of an articulated truck.

My hand trembles as I push my hair back from my face.

All of Reid's words about this town being under his control. His hatred of Victor.

Is he planning to overthrow him?

But how?

Victor has ensured that he’s anything but an easy target. He has to or he’d have been dead a long time ago. His allies might be powerful but so are his enemies.

If Reid has a plan, then it has to be something epic. Something well-planned.

A plan he wasn’t expecting me to intrude on. But one I could ultimately help with.

Letting my head fall back, I close my eyes for a beat.

Maybe I was right all the way along. I was meant to end up here. But maybe it isn’t about punishment for my stupid decisions. Maybe it’s to get the one thing I’ve always wanted.

Justice.

My heart rate picks up and I lift my head, focusing on my husband.

We’re going to do it, Mav.

We just need to get Reid on our side. And there is only one way to do that.

I need to tell him the truth.

The thought of saying the words, of letting their names roll off my tongue makes bile swirl in the pit of my stomach.

I’m on my feet before I’ve realized I can’t contain it and I drop heavily to my knees in front of the toilet before I retch, bringing up what little I’ve eaten today.

Wiping my sweaty brow, I can’t help but wonder how I will ever tell them everything they need to know if I can barely even think about it without vomiting.

Focus on the end goal, Alana.

Think of the future, walking around a white sandy beach with Mav’s fingers entwined with yours and for the first time in your life a happy, relaxed smile on your face.

I squeeze my eyes closed and try to picture it. But unlike every other time I’ve done the same thing, the image is hazy.

Our future even more uncertain than ever.

I can’t even see it anymore.

A sob threatens, but I force it down. Now isn’t the time for that.

Stealing Reid’s toothbrush again, I freshen up before marching across the room. I pull the door open and poke my head out. I’m expecting to find a bodyguard loitering to stop me from escaping, but surprisingly, the hall is silent.

As silently as possible, I tiptoe toward the stairs and descend slowly. The interior of this manor might have been completely modernized, but it’s the existing structure, which means with every step I take, there is another loud creak. I’m sure in the bright light of day they’re barely audible. But right now, they’re loud as fuck, and if anyone is waiting for me then they’ll be more than aware of my movement.
