He lowers the bottle and steps right into my body, letting his heat sear my skin.

“You know you want to, little dove. The shower is our place, after all.”

Pushing the desire and the wicked promises that sparkle in his eyes aside, I focus on what I should say, not what my body wants.

“No. Take me to the basement to see Mav.”

An amused laugh erupts.

“Nice try, Dove. Your pussy is good, but it isn’t a ticket to get you everything you want. Not under this roof, anyway.”

Irritation bubbles just beneath the surface as I stare into his mirth-filled eyes.

“I hate you, Julian Dempsey. As soon as I get the chance, I’m getting Mav and leaving all of this behind. You’re nothing to me. Nothing.”

His expression drops a beat before I spin around and run toward the stairs.

With the first orangey rays of dawn flooding the house, I miss the furniture as I make my escape.

My toe still burns from kicking the dresser in my search for the hidden door earlier, but I give it little thought. I’m used to a little pain. And it pales in comparison to the ache in my chest, knowing that Mav is stuck down there.

Does he even know where he is? Was he awake when Doc patched him up and they threw him down there?

Those questions and so many more spin around my head as I run up the stairs, the creaks nowhere near as loud now that I’m no longer trying to be discreet.

I want to say I’m surprised when I find a demon hiding in the shadows as I step into the hallway.

“It’s okay,” I snap. “I already know you’re a creep. You don’t need to hide.”

With a smirk, Reid steps from the doorway he was loitering in, his eyes dropping to my naked body.

I shake my head as he takes his fill.

Holding my arms out from my sides, I let him indulge.

“You’re just as sick as your best friend, you know that?”

He remains silent.

“Go on, if you want something,” I offer, stepping closer. “Every other scumbag in this town has taken something from me, why should you be any different. You want to follow in Daddy’s footsteps? Then what are you waiting for?” I taunt, the knot in my stomach tightening with every word I spit.

His expression darkens, his lips pressing into a flat line.

“I’m nothing like that cunt,” he sneers. “The only thing I want from you is the truth.”

“Would rather you steal pleasure from my body than make me confess to those.”

His eyes narrow.

“So I’ve seen. You forgiven JD now, huh?”

“Sex and pleasure don’t need to come from someone you like. I thought you of all people would know that. I can’t imagine any woman you’ve been with actually liked you. Bet it didn’t stop you either.”

“You have a really low opinion of men, don’t you?”

“You’re surprised?” I gasp. “I have only ever met one who didn’t want to use me, abuse me, or steal something from me. And all he’s got in return is a gunshot wound and to be locked up in my cell.”

“Oh, Pet,” he muses, something dark flashing in his eyes. “I think he’s got a lot more than that.”
