“I don’t know what’s going on with the two of you, but just make sure she gets back to her room, okay?” Brody sighed as he darted his gaze between Dyllan and the rest of the group.

“I’m not that much of an ass, Walker. I’ll make sure she makes it out unscathed.” Dyllan shook his head. He hoped his friends didn’t think he was that much of a jerk that he’d leave a woman alone like that.

Unless she decides to provoke me again.

Remaining against the wall, he watched as Brody made his way back to his group of friends. Dyllan nodded to Travis, the universal bro-signal that everything was forgiven, as they made their way out of the club. The guys held their giggling women up as they pushed through the crowd toward the door.

He couldn’t help his attention being drawn back to Skylar. Alone on the dance floor, she kept dancing but looked deflated. Scanning the crowd around her, he noticed more than a few unsteady men in her vicinity leer at her. His stomach churned as he saw their desire, their unabashed intentions toward the lonely woman on the dance floor.

“Fuck,” Dyllan muttered to himself as he made his way to the dance floor.

Skylar, her eyes closed, swaying to the beat, completely unaware of the attention she was drawing to herself.

Circling his arms around her waist, he shot warning glares at the inebriated men that dared to look her way. She wasn’t his to claim, but he sure as shit wasn’t going to let anything happen to her, especially with any one of these assholes.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Skylar demanded, placing her hands on his chest. She didn’t push him away, but she didn’t welcome him either.

“I’m stopping all these douchebags from thinking they have the right to approach you.” He pulled her in closer, narrowing his eyes on the douchebag that took a step toward her, lust clear in his eyes.

“Language,” Skylar scolded him. “And what makes you think you have that right?”

“Oh, I know I don’t,” he growled in her ear. “But I promised I’d take care of you tonight, princess, and I keep my promise.”

“I’m not a child that you need to babysit. Leave. I can take care of myself.” She swayed in his arms. He pulled her tight to him, not letting her lose her balance.

“Don’t fight me on this, babydoll.”

“Or what, Grumpy Bear?” Skylar straightened, bringing her height as close to his as possible.

Dyllan cursed himself as he laced his fingers through hers, pulling her behind him through the crowd. He heard her protesting behind him, but she didn’t fight him. He thanked whoever was listening that she didn’t make a scene or cause him to have to throw her over his shoulder.

And bare her ass to everyone in the club? Not likely.

The second Dyllan stepped out of the club and the doors shut behind him, he breathed a sigh of relief. The constant noise of the casino was nothing compared to the headache-inducing bass of the club.

“Just who do you think you are, pulling me out of the club like that?” Skylar smacked him across the chest with her purse. “I paid a good chunk of change to get in there.”

“So did I.” Dyllan didn’t hold back as he towered over her, refusing to let go of her hand. He didn’t want to admit how right it felt having her hand in his. How soft she felt compared to his hardened hands. How soft she was compared to his hardened soul.

His shoulders slumped as he looked into her crystal blue eyes. His heart rate slowed, and the tension in his body started to ease. “Look, just let me make sure you get back to your room in one piece, alright? I’m not that much of an asshole that I’m going to leave you alone in the middle of the night after you’ve been drinking.”

“I don’t think you’re one,” Skylar said quietly, looking down at their joined hands.

“One what?” Dyllan asked.

“What you called yourself,” she replied, not looking up.

“You can say the word, Skylar. You won’t self-combust.” Dyllan couldn’t help but poke her, knowing how much she hated cursing.

“Never mind, I take it back. You are an asshole.” Skylar narrowed her eyes at him, taking her hand out of his.

He chuckled as he watched her storm off, her blonde curls bouncing along her back. He couldn’t help but trail his gaze down to her ass, clenching his hands into fists, resisting the urge to grab it. Instead, he closed the distance between them and followed her.

“Where are you going, babydoll?”

“Ugh, I’ve told you not to call me that. And I’m going to get another drink. I’m not ready to go back up to the room yet, and I certainly don’t want to stand here in the middle of the casino with you.” Her seething tone made him smirk.

“Why don’t we go to the bar over there? It looks to be a little quieter, and we can grab a drink until you’re ready to go.”
