Skylar

“Earth to Skylar,” Lila said, waving a manicured hand in front of her friend’s face.

“Huh? Sorry, what did I miss?” She responded, snapping out of her trance.

“What colour do you want on your toes?” Lila repeated, looking at her questioningly.

“Oh, uh.” Skylar looked at the samples in front of her as the nail technician guided her feet back into the whirling warm water. “The same purple as my hands, please.”

“What’s up with you?” Lila asked. “You’ve been in your own little world all morning.”

“Did something happen after we left last night?” Kade asked from her other side.

Did something happen? Skylar scoffed to herself. Oh, you know, just waking up married to the man that both infuriates me and turns me on more than any other man on the planet.

“Oh my god, did Dyllan do something?” Lila covered her face with her hand. “Travis is going to kick his ass and then get fired for doing it.”

“Relax, Dyllan didn’t do anything.” At least nothing I also didn’t do, she thought to herself. “I’m just tired and hungover.”

Kade looked at her and tilted her head. “Are you sure that’s it? You can tell us if Dyllan did something. I mean, I don’t think he would, but if he did…”

“Guys, relax!” Skylar sat up straight in her massaging chair. “Dyllan was fine. Nothing happened. I swear I’m just tired. I never sleep well after I’ve been drinking.”

“Alright, if you say that’s all it is…” Kade replied, shooting a questioning look at Lila.

“I do,” Skylar interrupted.

“So, what exactly happened with you guys last night after we left? You were pretty adamant you didn’t want to go back to your room,” Lila asked.

“Nothing. We just went to the bar and had a few more drinks.” Skylar kept her voice flat, but she could feel the panic rise in her body the more they asked her about Dyllan.

“And that’s it?” Kade asked.

“With the way you two had been acting toward each other, I highly doubt that you just sat down and had drinks together like old friends,” Lila added, sending a look to Kade that Skylar couldn’t decipher.

“Well, I didn’t say that—”

“So, what happened?” Kade placed her elbow on the arm of the chair, resting her chin on her palm and leaning in toward Skylar.

“Not much. We talked. We drank. We left,” Skylar answered.

That’s what she assumed happened anyway. She couldn’t exactly recall what happened and especially didn’t recall how they ended up married by Elvis.

“Hmm,” Lila replied, narrowing her eyes at Skylar. “There’s more to the story, but we’ll leave it there for now.”

“Just know you can talk to us.” Kade placed her hand on Skylar’s arm, giving her a sympathetic look.

“I promise, there’s nothing to worry about.”

Not for you to worry about, anyway.

Lila and Kade went back to talking about their evening and what they wanted to do with the rest of their day. The group had decided the girls would do their spa and shopping day while the guys rode dirt bikes and did a beer tour before meeting up for dinner that evening.

Butterflies fluttered in Skylar’s stomach as she thought about seeing Dyllan again.

My husband. Dyllan is my freaking husband.

Never in a million years did she ever think that she’d get so drunk she’d marry a near-stranger. But here she was, married to a near-stranger.
