“What do you mean?” Her breath halted as she asked.

“You’re a wedding planner who didn’t get a proper wedding. You deserve the lights, the fancy reception, the big poofy dress, the whole big event.” He cupped her cheek as he gazed into her deep blue eyes.

“It doesn’t matter.” She glanced over his shoulder, eyes watering.

“Hey,” he said softly, nudging her chin until she brought her gaze back to him. “It matters to me, Skylar. You’re my wife; I want to take care of you.”

The song finished, but they remained locked in each other’s gazes, standing still in the middle of the barn as they locked eyes. For once, it wasn’t a showdown of wills and stubbornness. Dyllan felt his heart melting a little for the petite blonde in his arms. She was feisty as hell, never backed down, and exactly the type of woman he needed.

“I should finish setting up the tables,” her voice was breathless, no real conviction behind her words.

“Okay, but this conversation isn’t over. After tomorrow, Kade and Brody will be married, and we won’t hide anymore, understand?” he said sternly.

Skylar nodded slowly, not breaking eye contact with him. Dyllan had an inkling she’d never truly been taken care of before, which made him want to pound that twatwaffle of an ex of hers even more.

“Good.” Dyllan leaned in and brushed his lips against hers. He watched as she closed her eyes, raising the corner of her mouth at his touch. Cupping the back of her head in his hands, he pulled her in and deepened the kiss. He may not be good at expressing himself with words, but this he could do.

She moaned into his kiss, gripping his shoulders as she pushed herself onto her tiptoes to press deeper into him. Closing his eyes, he relished the feel of her small body pressed into his. She fit so perfectly in his arms that he was afraid to admit just how right it felt. It scared him and calmed him in the same breath, just like she had from the beginning.

He didn’t deserve her, and she didn’t deserve the life he would give her, but he would try his damn hardest to give her everything.

“I really need to get this done, or we won’t get any sleep tonight,” she whimpered, pulling back from him.

“Alright, put me to work, boss,” he gave her a wink, which set her off into a fit of giggles. Swatting his chest, she turned and made her way back to the table, cleaning up what was left from their dinner. He couldn’t help but stare at her as she bent over, picking up the bags and boxes and placing them in a garbage bag at the side of the room. He loved the determined look on her face as she grabbed a rag and wiped down the table before placing a tablecloth on top, transforming it from a rough, plastic table to an elegant setting in no time.

Working together, they moved quickly as Skylar guided him on where to place candles and chairs, teaching him how to put on a chair covering and tie a bow properly. He trailed behind her, following instructions but quickly learning that a lot of the fine details were not meant for him. To her credit, Skylar would just laugh and fix what he’d attempted to do, not once getting flustered or angry about it. She showed so much kindness and patience with him that he found himself looking at her differently.

She was no longer the stuck-up city girl he first saw. This Skylar was quieter, softer. He couldn’t help his heart from racing when he looked at her dressed down in shorts and a tank top. She worked harder than he could have imagined and created a beautiful space for the reception, working through every ounce of exhaustion to give Kade and Brody the best wedding they could possibly have.

“Come here,” he said, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her back to his chest.

“Just a minute, I’m almost done with this centrepiece,” she said with a chuckle as she placed the tea light in the vase. She turned in his arms, wrapping her arms around his neck. “There, I’m all yours.”

“All mine, hmm?” His mouth ticked up in a smirk. “I like the sound of that.”

“Well, you’d better use your time wisely because we have to get going if we have any hope of getting some sleep tonight,” she said as she gave him a coy grin.

“Oh, I think there are things other than sleep I’d like to do with you tonight.” He lowered his mouth to hers in a demanding kiss. She responded with the same passion and enthusiasm, leaving him breathless.

“Skylar? I have the…” a voice said from the direction of the door before stopping with a gasp.

Skylar turned in his arms, fingers covering her mouth as she stood wide-eyed at their guest. “Hi, Mandy. I can explain.”

Chapter Fifteen

Skylar

Mandy’s gaze flitted between Skylar and Dyllan as she stood just inside the barn door holding a box.

“Here, let me take that from you,” Dyllan said as he strode past Skylar, taking the cardboard box from a very stunned Mandy’s arms.

“Did I just see what I thought I saw?” she asked, keeping her gaze on Skylar.

“I, uh…” Skylar said, shooting a frantic gaze at Dyllan.

He shrugged as he looked at Skylar. “We’re married.”

“You’re what?” Mandy yelled, no longer able to keep calm as she looked between the two.
