Because I know my wife. I’ve come to know her almost as well as I know myself.

“You used her love of her niece to hang on to her like the vulture you are. You couldn’t even look at Eve for more than a few seconds last night.” I punch him again.

Wallace takes a wild swing at me, but I easily avoid it.

“She’s your fucking daughter and you couldn’t say more than two sentences to her. You’re the worst type of man.” Another punch causes him to land on his ass. “Not even a fucking man.”

When he moves to get up, I hold him down with my foot on his chest.

“I would never, ever do business with someone as pathetic as you. You’re a piece of shit. Yesterday was the last time you’ll ever lay eyes on Riley or Eve again.”

“D-Did Riley set this up?”

“Don’t fucking say my wife’s name!

“In a minute, my security’s going to walk back through that door and shove you in the back of the same car they picked you up in. Then they’ll deliver you to the two brothers you’ve been running from for a few years now. We’ve already made the call. They graciously got on a plane to Williamsport overnight.”

Last night, Riley told me about Wallace running from a gang, headed by two brothers, and how he used her to hide from them a few years ago.

“I don’t suspect you’ll live past your meeting with them.”

As soon as those words leave my mouth, Uncle Brutus enters. “Done?”

I grin over my shoulder and nod. “Good. I want to get home before my wife wakes up.”

“Please give Aunt Mia a kiss and hug for me,” I say, starting to exit.

He snorts. “I’m only giving my wife kisses for me. You’ve got your own wife now. Go hug and kiss her. I’ll tell Mia you said hi though. Stop by the coffee shop one day.”

“I will. And I’ll bring my wife and Eve.”

He nods, and I leave that dank basement. Wallace Jr. is done for and I don’t feel even a speck of guilt about it. The bastard had it long coming.

CHAPTER36

Riley

I take note of the reporters and cameras that mill about as Kyle and I enter the lobby of city hall. Today is the day of the press conference with Ryan Nick. He’s invited reporters and newspapers to attend but kept the topic quiet.

He thinks he’s about to expose Townsend Industries, but what’s about to happen isn’t that.

“Credentials,” the one of the hulking security guard demands.

“Here,” Kyle tersely hands him our invites. “We’re on the list.”

The guard’s tone suddenly changes. “Right this way, Mr. Townsend.”

Kyle takes my hand as we’re escorted to the front row. There are numerous councilmembers and business personnel among the crowd. Ryan Nick stands behind a podium waving at people as they enter. He pauses when he looks over and sees Kyle.

His smile widens as he waves.

My husband waves back but mutters, “Bastard.”

“Kyle,” Ryan actually says from where he stands, “thank you for coming. I believe you’ll find today’s press conference particularly interesting.”

Kyle just gives him a nod as we take our seats.

“Thank you all for attending,” Ryan Nick starts.
