“Bathroom?” Kyle brusquely questions.

She blinks, but then quickly escorts us to the restaurant’s restroom.

“Take it off,” he orders, pointing to the bathroom door. “Wear a different color.”

“What is this about?”

“It told you it’s not appropriate for a business dinner.”

“That makes no sense.”

Onlookers who pass by throw curious looks our way. Then it dawns on me. That weekend we spent together. Kyle mentioned how much it drives him crazy when I wear this color. He even had me wear it when I lost that bet.

A smile spreads across my lips. “Sure thing, husband,” I say in a mock sultry voice. I don’t miss the way his nostrils flare and his lips part slightly, before I enter the bathroom.

That controlling bastard thinks I’m going to remove my lipstick just because it sparks a little too much emotion for him.Fuck that.

I take the time to carefully reapply my favorite color. Then I add a coat of my shear lip gloss to give the color an extra pop. It’s not an overly done look, but it is slightly sultrier.

I agreed to this marriage to protect Eve from that psycho Dean Walsh. I’ll allow Kyle to use my skills and connection with Dean for his revenge or whatever, but I will not be controlled by him.

My smile widens as I stare in the mirror.

When I exit the bathroom, Kyle isn’t there. I start for the front of the restaurant but a voice on the other side of the men’s bathroom door stops me.

“He’s here tonight with her. Yeah, dinner with Todd Smith.”

I perk up because I suspect this person is talking about Kyle and me. The male voice sounds familiar, but I can’t put my finger on who it is exactly.

“Mrs. Townsend.”

I look over to see the hostess.

“Your husband is waiting for you.”

With a nod, I follow her to meet up with Kyle. As soon as he sees me a deep V forms between his brows and his entire face morphs into a scowl.

“Something wrong, honey?” I ask in an overly sweet voice.

I know as well as he does that him asking me to go back and change this lipstick will make us even more late for dinner.

“We should hurry if we don’t want to keep Todd Smith waiting.”

Kyle doesn’t say anything as he takes me elbow. “Let’s go.”

“Right this way.” The hostess steers us toward one of the private dining rooms.

There are three couples already in the room when we arrive.

“Kyle,” one of the men greets as he rises form his chair.

“Todd.” Kyle stretches his hand out to greet Todd Smith. He must not be aware of what he’s doing because his other arm slips from mine, but it falls to the small of my back. He’s holding me to him.

“And who is this?” Todd Smith turns to me with a smile.

Kyle hesitates, his gaze falling to my lips again. “This is Riley,” he announces. “My wife.”

Stunned silence takes ahold of the room. I’m among the surprised ones. I thought he’d introduce me as his date for the night—a contractor working with Townsend Industries for the next few months.
