I don’t know why but the desire to reach out and touch him overtakes me. I follow my instinct and cover his hand with mine, squeezing it. It’s the same move Amber Smith did for her husband when he got emotional at the table.

A part of me expects Kyle to reject my touch, to push me away. Instead, he unfolds his hand and flips it over. Our fingers intertwine, and he stares at our clasped hands. It’s the first genuine touch between us since before our wedding vows.

“Todd needed someone to see him. To know that the dream he and his best friend had wouldn’t disappear. He’s still grieving.”

Kyle’s hold on my hand tightens. “His legacy will live on. I’ll make sure of it.”

I nod because I can hear the resoluteness in his voice.

“I don’t doubt you can accomplish anything you set your mind to.” Those words come out as naturally as opening my eyes in the morning. They’re true. I don’t think there’s anything Kyle can’t do if he wants it bad enough.

Our car stops, and I look out the window to see we’ve reached my condo.

Kyle suddenly snatches his hand away from mine. The spell is broken.

He doesn’t move or even look at me when he asks, “Do you still have the thumb drive?”

I search my memory, having almost forgotten about the damn thing. “Yes.”

“Good. Don’t do anything with it before I tell you to.”

I bristle at the command in his voice. “What are you going to do with it?”

He looks at me, that coldness back in his eyes. “You’ll know when I tell you.”

I sigh and don’t bother asking anything else because I know he’s not going to give out any more details.

I go to open the car door but his hands on my wrist stops me.

“Clear out space in your closet.”

I give him a confused look.

“I’m moving in tomorrow.”

The car door on my side suddenly opens. Our driver stands by the door, waiting for my exit.

“What do you mean?”

“Goodnight, Riley.” Again, he says the words without looking my way. He’s like a damn brick wall when he’s like this. Short of a damn bulldozer I’m not going to make any headway in this conversation. Not until Kyle is ready.

My phone rings. It’s Eve.

I climb out of the car and answer her call.

“Hey, Ladybug,” I say, switching from fake wife mode to Aunt Riley.

I don’t know what Kyle’s expecting but we will not be living together.

CHAPTER24

Kyle

Sean:ETA - 2 hours, 20 minutes.

I check the text from the lead guard assigned to Eve.

“Fuck,” I grunt. I thought we would’ve had more time.
