“No one.” I glare at the woman.

She has the nerve to blink like I’m the one who said something wrong. She looks over at Kennedy.

“I was just asking—”

“Leaving,” I interject. “You were just leaving because you obviously can’t take a fucking hint.” At this point, she’s starting to piss me off.

“I’m not going anywhere.” Her voice grows louder.

“Babe, what’s the matter?”

A familiar male voice shocks me. For a beat, I can’t move.Did I hear that voice correctly?

“I heard your voice a few tables away,” his voice continues. “What happened?” Finally, he turns my way and our eyes lock.

Nope, it wasn’t a figment of my imagination. Staring me in the face with his arm wrapped around the irritating woman from the bathroom is my ex-fiancé, Lawrence Jordan.

“Monique.” His eyes widen, looking as surprised as I am.

“Do you know her?” the woman at his side asks.

He looks down at her but pinches his lips together.

As I stare at the two people in front of me, it dawns on me. I’m the ex she was talking about. The one her boyfriend dumped because she was … what was it? Oh, right. Tooneedy.

“Monique, h-how are you?” he dares to ask.

Sudden anger infuses all of my senses. Without thinking, I take Kennedy’s drink from her hand and throw it in his face. The woman at his side screeches.

“Real mature, Monique,” Lawrence says through gritted teeth. “I figured you wouldn’t be over my dumping you, but this is beyond unreasonable … especially after you cost me all of the shows that I had planned over the next year.”

I blink in confusion. “What the hell are you talking about?” I hold up my hand before he can answer. “I don’t care. Just don’t speak to me ever again.”

I turn to Kennedy. “Sorry about your drink. I’ll buy you another.”

There’s a smirk on her face. “Losing the drink was worth it.”

“You’re going to pay for this dress,” the woman at Lawrence’s side insists. “It’s vintage! Getting this dry cleaned will cost a fortune,” she whines.

I smile at the dark maroon stains that pepper her cream dress. My grin widens as I look over at Kennedy.

“Red wine. Nice.”

She laughs at the thumbs-up I give her. I hadn’t even paid attention to the type of drink she had in her hand.

“I like to keep it classy,” she jokes.

“Grow up, Monique,” Lawrence’s voice interrupts our mini celebration. “This is insane behavior on your part. If—”

“I suggest you calm your fucking tone when speaking to her,” a deep, thundering voice interjects from behind Lamond.

The chill that runs down my spine tells me who the voice belongs to seconds before I look over behind Lawrence to find Diego glowering down at him.

“Unless you want your ass beat in front of your new girlfriend a second time.”

Glancing down and noticing Diego’s fists are clenched tightly, I move to him without thinking. I practically push my ex to the side to step into Diego’s warm embrace. As soon as I lay my hand against his chest, some of the tension ebbs out of his body.

He peers down into my eyes, and I can’t help but to feel so comforted. Safe and protected.
