I’m well aware Dan doesn’t like that I’m in this position. He believes it should be his. What he doesn’t realize is he has more ambition than actual talent. He’s lucky I didn’t say as much during the meeting.

As I exit the conference room, I come face to face with my uncle, Joshua. There’s a half-smile on his face.

“You overheard that, huh?”

“You sounded dangerously close to the CEO or the COO of this place,” he jokes, referring to my uncles, Aaron and Kyle, his son, my cousin, and closest friend besides Monique.

I snort. “I wasn’t that bad.”

He lifts a dark eyebrow.

“The designs weren’t right. We can do better.”

His smirk grows to a full-on smile as he grips my shoulder. “It took me years to finally get you to come over to work for us. Are you going to tell me what finally changed your mind?”

His sharp, emerald green eyes stare me down, and it’s on the tip of my tongue to tell him the truth. I might crack if I wasn’t used to the intensity that my uncles and father share.

But my reasoning isn’t relevant. Not anymore. The past is the past.

“It was time,” I say.

His shoulders slump, and his hand falls away from me. “Keep your secrets for now. I’ll eventually get to the truth. Let me know if Dan or anyone else is an issue on this project. He’s cocky as hell and a sound designer and he knows it.”

“But not great,” I finish for him.

He nods and continues, “He might be jealous that you’re leading this project right out of the gate.”

I cock my head to the side. “Did it sound like he was a problem?”

He chuckles. “And they saywe’recocky.”

“I don’t know anything about this fictionaltheyyou speak of.”

He pats me on the back. “Because they’re fucking irrelevant. Speaking of family, don’t even think about working next weekend.”

“I’m the best man. I don’t have time to work even if I wanted to,” I say. Next weekend is Kyle’s wedding. Second wedding, actually. He and his wife, Riley, are already married, but no family was present for that wedding. He swore it was only about revenge.

Yeah, right.

I could see him falling for that woman from the moment he met her.

“Are you bringing a date?” my uncle suddenly asks.

“Monique,” I reply without thinking.

His eyes light up. “Damon’s happy as hell she moved back. I know you are, too.”

I can’t help the smile that parts my lips. She’s back home where she belongs. Correction: she’s almost where she belongs. Getting her to agree to be my date to Kyle’s wedding was another step in the right direction.

“I have to go—”

“Hey, Dad,” my uncle’s words are cut off by his seventeen-year-old son, Cole. “Hey, Diego.” Cole nods in my direction. “My dad told me you were working here now. That’s cool,” he says as I pull him in for a hug.

“I was here a lot when I was your age, too. Maybe you’re the next architect.” I lift an eyebrow.

He shakes his head before ducking it. “I’m just here to see my dad.”

“No, this kid’s got legal matters on his mind,” Uncle Joshua says, wrapping his arm around his adopted son. The two look nothing alike with my uncle’s dark brown hair, green eyes, and freckles. Cole has light blond hair, blue eyes, and no freckles in sight. Yet, they’re family.
