“Why am I nervous?” I ask the empty room as if some mysterious voice will answer back.

After finishing up at the art fair with Diego, he dropped me off at my place so that I could get ready for our dinner with my parents. He should be here to pick me up any minute.

For the life of me, I can’t understand why I’m feeling nervous. This is Diego. We’re having dinner with my parents. An occasion we’ve literally done hundreds if not thousands of times throughout our friendship. As kids and teens there was hardly a night that I wasn’t over his place for dinner or him over mine.

This is different, the voice in my mind reminds me. All of those times were when we were just friends. This time we’re more than friends. A lot more.

We’re a little more than a month into ourarrangement, and every day I can feel myself falling for him more and more. Feelings I didn’t know were possible have started to emerge. That, more than anything, is terrifying.

The knock on the door startles me out of my contemplations.

“Coming.”

Even though I know it’s him, I check the camera on the wall before opening the door. A smile spreads across my lips when I see him in a pair of dark jeans, button-down shirt, and suit jacket. He looks the perfect dressy casual and so damn ridiculously sexy.

“Hey,” I say as I open the door.

His lips twist into a frown, and I can’t help the urge to run my hand over his beard.

“Did you check the camera before you opened the door?” he asks in lieu of saying hi.

I give him a deadpan expression. “I knew it was you,” I tell him even though that’s exactly what I did.

“Safety, baby.”

“How many times do I have to remind you that I lived in New York City for six years, alone for most of that time?”

His frown deepens. “First of all, I don’t like to think about you living in that big ass city all by yourself. And second …” He stops to pull me into his body. We’re now front to front.

I inhale his masculine scent. An unintentional purr escapes my lips.

“I especially don’t like to be reminded that you lived with another man.” He doesn’t give me time to answer by pulling me into a kiss that’s certain to smear my lipstick.

I wrap my hands around his neck and pull myself into his body. I don’t want any space between us. A sexual hunger that I’ve never known before has begun to overtake me. It’s not like I was a prude before, but being with him has uncorked something inside of me that I didn’t know was there laying in wait.

“We definitely should stop there if we’re going to make it to dinner with your parents,” he says against my lips.

I poke out my lips in a pout.

The deep chuckle that spills out of his lips sends a thrill through my body.

“We’ll pick up where we left off after dinner.”

“You promise?”

His smile makes my nipples harden. “Have I ever broken a promise to you?”

No.

Not ever.

He kisses the tip of my nose and then pulls away. My body temperature notably drops from the loss of his body heat so close.

“You probably should redo that lipstick.” Diego runs his thumb along my bottom lip. He lets out a groan of pain when I stick my tongue out, licking the tip of his thumb.

“You’re fucking killing me.” He actually sounds like he’s in pain.
