“Jerk,” Cody muttered, rubbing at his forehead.

“So, how was your day?” Demetrius said in an overly innocent tone.

Cody gave him a flinty look that quickly mellowed. He smiled and shook his head. “Pretty fucking great. How about yours? You feeling any better?”

“About the same.”

“Fucking stoner dudes in big houses.”

“Right?”

Cody approached and leaned down for a kiss, but Demetrius pulled back with a grimace.

“You’ve still got some pigeon shit.” Demetrius gestured toward his own forehead.

Cody’s expression collapsed into irritation and he rubbed at his forehead. “Fucking birds. Fucking Jugs.”

Demetrius looked toward the calm water of the pond, the sun sparkling off its surface. “We could clean up before heading home.”

Cody immediately stopped his frantic rubbing and raised his eyebrows. “Oh my, are you once again suggesting we go skinny-dipping?”

“Did you bring a swimsuit?”

“No.”

“Then, yes, I’m suggesting we go skinny-dipping.”

“Twice in one week. I’m impressed.”

Cody held out his hand and Demetrius looked at it with a gentle sneer. “Is that the hand you were just using to rub off bird shit?”

Cody scowled. “Fine. Come on.”

Demetrius laughed. Once Cody had secured the animal carrier the pigeons had been in, he led the way across the trail to the rocks and grass of the water’s edge. They each shaded their eyes and scoped out the shoreline, deciding they were alone. Cody sat on a rock to untie his boots, and Demetrius sat beside him, their hips touching and making him think of lying in bed together, one of his favorite places to be.

Once he’d peeled off his socks, Cody paused, toes scrunching and releasing in the grass beneath his feet. “That guy with the snake from yesterday?”

“Devin Sykes?”

“Yeah, that’s him. He went to high school with us.”

“He did?” Demetrius sat with his hands between his knees and looked across the water. “I don’t remember the name.”

“He was on the football team, and he was also a diver.”

“I never went to any of the swimming or diving competitions.” Demetrius stood and pulled off his shirt. “I don’t remember him from the games I attended. Did he recognize you?”

“Oh yeah, right away. He’s married and has a big house.”

“I bet it’s not as big as stoner dude’s house,” Demetrius said. “But go on.”

Cody put a big, comforting hand on Demetrius’s bare shoulder and squeezed. “Stoner dude really got to you, didn’t he?”

“Yeah, but we already talked about it. I’m just whining a bit. Go on with what you were saying.”

Cody removed his hand from Demetrius’s shoulder and pulled off his own shirt. Demetrius let his gaze linger on the pale width of Cody’s chest, his eyes following the patch of soft, dark hair between his pecs as it ran down his long torso to disappear beneath the waistband of his shorts.

“We were catching up, you know, just talking, and Devin asked if I was married. The usual question.”
