“We didn’t find all the bodies from before,” Cody said, then added a little softer, “just some of them.”

“I’m thinking it might be a good idea for me to take my vacation time now.”

“What the hell? This wasn’t even a weird case. It was a drowning.”

“Yeah, out at Parson’s Pond, where people rarely swim and there hasn’t been a drowning in how many years?”

“Dude, I don’t know. I’m not the town statistician.”

Jugs grunted. “That’s a big word for you.”

“Fuck you.”

“I’m telling you, I don’t like this.”

“You don’t like anything.”

“Most things,” Jugs corrected. “And you’re right.” He sighed. “How’s Demetrius?”

“He’s all right. Kind of freaked out, though.”

“Not surprised. Swimming around and bumping into a body is bound to slide some trauma into his psychological DMs.”

Cody frowned and shook his head. “What? What the hell does that mean?”

“God you’re old.”

“We’re the same age!”

“And yet…” Jugs let his statement fade out. “Tell Demetrius I’m sorry for his shock, and to send me a text if there are any jobs waiting in the morning.”

“Thanks, I appreciate it.”

“Yeah, I know. But I’m telling you again, Bonker…”

“I know, I know. You’re cashing in all your vacation time at the slightest hint of weirdness.”

“That’s right. And this whole thing already reeks of monster.”

“It. Was. A. Drowning.” Cody said. “It’s a public body of water. Members of the public sometimes drown in public bodies of water.”

But he didn’t mention to Jugs that the woman was dressed for a comfortable night at home and not a swim. Cody didn’t want to look too closely at that detail. Not yet.

“Or people are sometimes drowned,” Jugs said. “Against their will.”

“You’re impossible.”

“You’ll see. Go look after your husband. I’m going to take something for my nerves and lie down.”

Cody heard the boop of Jugs disconnecting, and he lowered the phone, saying to himself, “Big baby.”

“Jugs?”

Cody looked over to see Demmy wearing a bathrobe, his hair still wet from the shower as he leaned in the doorway between the kitchen and the dining room.

“Yeah. Being a drama queen.”

“Think he’s right?”
