“I haven’t seen her in a few days,” Cody said. “Feels like a good time to stop in and visit since we don’t have jobs on the schedule.”

“Yeah, of course. I’d like to see her.”

Cody let the silence hang a bit before saying, “That was some bombshell from Zenona, huh?”

Demmy nodded, eyes fixed on a spot somewhere out ahead of the truck. “Yeah, it sure was.”

Another stretch of silence, then Cody said, “Think she might have had the bruises around her ankle before she went into the pond?”

“I don’t know. I guess we’ll have to wait and see if we can learn anything once the official autopsy is completed.” Demmy looked over at him. “It’s handy Zenona’s made friends with the new medical examiner. Have you met him yet?”

“Nope, I haven’t. Why?”

“Just wondering.”

Cody knew Demmy could be wondering about any topic. “Anything specific?”

“Well, sort of. For one, I wonder how serious things might be between them.”

“Wait, what?”

Demmy looked at him with a half-smile. “Come on, you don’t think she’s at least a little bit interested in this guy? I mean, did you hear the way she was talking about him?”

“No. When someone mentions a medical examiner, I think of someone older and kind of bossy, like that guy who played Quincy.”

“Oh my God, you have got to watch a different channel.”

“Hey, I watch ESPN, too.”

“Please refer to my previous statement.”

Cody huffed. Had Zenona acted differently when she told them about the bruising the ME had noted around the drowning victim’s ankle? He didn’t really think so, but then again he’d been a bit distracted over being served papers earlier and giving yet another statement to the sheriff’s department. Not to mention Lucia actually approaching them and asking if they thought this might be a monster case, which Cody absolutely hoped it was not.

“Michael something,” Demmy said.

“Sorry, what?”

“The ME’s name. It’s Michael something. Zenona mentioned it.”

“Okaaay. Why is that important?”

“Because she didn’t call him doctor something or other, but Michael.”

“Oh, okay.” He glanced at him. “Smart. You’re a regular Angela Lansbury with this stuff.”

“Oh my God, seriously, you have got to stop watching that channel.”

“You know, if you’d just give it a chance, I think you’d really like it.” Cody turned into the entrance for Parson’s Pines, and then into the driveway for the nursing and convalescent home.

“I don’t think so.”

“Just try it. Sit with me and watch Mannix.”

Demmy laughed as Cody eased into a parking spot. “No.” He opened his door and stepped out.

“Come on,” Cody continued as he got out and headed for the doors. It was another humid day, and he felt the prickle of sweat down the length of his spine and across his scalp. “How about Columbo? Or Golden Girls? Are you a Rose or a Dorothy?”

“Just stop,” Demmy said, but with a laugh, and Cody relished the sound. He’d pulled Demmy back from wherever he went when he was thinking deeply, and he considered that a win. He didn’t care if Demmy went off inside himself and thought for a while, as long as he always found his way back.
