“Of course he does.”

“Second, he asked Lucia if there had been any calls to the station about missing camels, and she told us to fuck off and figure our shit out for ourselves.”

“She’s so helpful.”

“Right?” Oliver shook his head. “But then she told me, through him, that she would call in and ask and let us know.”

Demetrius’s phone buzzed and he pulled it from his pocket. “It’s Cody.” He answered the call. “Are you going to make any hump jokes?”

“You know me so well,” Cody said with a deep chuckle that shot right to Demetrius’s crotch. “Lucia said that some petting zoo out toward Harriettville reported a camel missing.”

“Harriettville? That’s pretty far away from here.”

“Camels are a travel animal,” Oliver said.

“Tell Ollie he’s full of shit,” Cody said.

“Cody says you need to check your sources,” Demetrius said to Oliver.

“That’s not what I said,” Cody said.

“I doubt that’s what he said,” Oliver said.

“Where are you?” Cody asked. “I want to come help out with the camel.”

“Good, I could use your help,” Demetrius said, giving him the address.

Cody repeated it and said something to Lucia that Demetrius couldn’t hear, then he came back on the line. “Lucia’s bringing me to you. She wants to see the camel, too.”

“I did not say that,” Lucia shouted in the background.

“I know what’s why you agreed to drop me off so quickly,” Cody shot back. “Don’t deny it.”

“I should let you out here on the side of the road,” Lucia said.

“All right, I’ll see you soon,” Demetrius said over the bickering on Cody’s side of the phone, and then ended the call. Stuffing the phone in his pocket, he looked at Oliver and said, “Let’s get ready to lead this guy back home.”

CHAPTER TEN

Cody couldn’t stop smiling. He knelt in the bed of Demmy’s truck holding a stick out the back with a head of wilting lettuce tied to the end with twine. The camel—a goddamn, honest to God camel—plodded along after the truck, trying to get to the lettuce. Lucia followed a few yards behind the camel, lights on to keep the traffic away from them.

“How’s it going?” Demmy asked through the open back window.

“It’s the best day in a long time,” Cody said.

“I knew you liked a dry hump,” Oliver said from the passenger seat.

“Boo,” Cody said over his shoulder. “That was a reach.”

“Yeah, it wasn’t my best work.”

“How much farther?” Cody asked.

“We’re almost to the high school,” Demmy replied. “The petting zoo guy will meet us in the parking lot there with his trailer.”

“This is awesome,” Cody said, extending the stick far enough for the camel to peel off a lettuce leaf. “This is way better than when we lured that bull back to Mr. Alvedson’s pasture.”

“Yeah!” Demmy said. “That’s what gave me this idea.”
