I didn’t meanfor Adam to get this drunk, but he’s kinda out of control. This has just proven to me that he really has feelings for Clara, and that everything will be hard for us moving forward. I don’t know how it will look.

I’ve never been worried that anything would wreck our pack before, but now I’m concerned about this Clara. Who the hell is she, and why does she have so many people falling at her feet? What freaking magic does she have? I’m very annoyed about all of this.

“Do you want another drink?” Adam slurs to me as he slides his glass close to me. “I will get these ones. We need something else, don’t we?”

I nod along as if I’m drinking with him, but I haven’t touched a drop. I need to stay stone-cold sober for the moment that Mason finally comes back home. I don’t know where he is and what he’s doing, but he hasn’t returned as yet.

But Adam understandably doesn’t want to drink alone, so I’m going along with the rouse and acting like I’m a little tipsy as well. It’s not much fun, especially when I’m getting increasingly on edge about what’s to come…

Adam staggers over to the bar and orders us drinks. If this was happening at any other bar, I’m sure Adam would be refused service because he’s too wasted. But we’re at home. Adam has a bed a few minutes away from here, we’ll be fine. I’m pretty sure that I’m going to be the one hauling his ass to bed in a while, but whatever…

“Oh my God.” While Adam is at the bar, the door swings open, and in walks Mason. The time has come… but he isn’t alone. “Oh my fucking God.”

That’s her, isn’t it? It has to be. I didn’t get a good look at her while we were at their base, I was too worried about what the hell was going on with Adam, but I just know. I don’t need to be told. The woman with her arms around Mason has to be the mysterious Clara.

The most inexplicable thing of all is the lightning bolt of lust that shoots right through me. It burns bright, flaming inside me, not allowing me to take my eyes off her for even a moment. I can now see why Adam was lying on the forest floor in the middle of the woods. I might have been the same way had I seen Clara before now. I haven’t drunk a drop of booze, but I feel like I’m wasted as I stare at her. I can’t stop my head from spinning.

Fuck, I want her to have her arms around me. I wish Clara was touching me too. If I’d seen her down the scope of my sniper rifle, then I never would have been able to pull the trigger. She’s beautiful, but it’s more than that. She’s captivating, overwhelming, and stunning. There really seems to be some magic rolling off of her in waves. I’m blown away.

“There he is,” Adam calls out beside me. “Oh fuck, and he’s with her too. What the hell are we going to do? Should we go and tell him anyway?”

He steps forward heading towards Mason before I can give him an answer. I reach out and grab him, trying to hold him back because I don’t want him to do something stupid. If he’s been feeling this way ever since he first saw Clara, whenever that might have been, then there’s no telling what he’ll do. But Adam is really hard to hold. He’s shockingly strong for someone who’s consumed as much booze as he has.

“Mason, you need to come here. You need to talk to us. We have something to say.”

“No, Adam, come on.” I tug him backward, grateful that Mason either didn’t hear him or chose to ignore him because he’s so wasted. “Come on. It’s time to go to bed. You need to let me deal with Mason. You asked me to do this, remember?”

“I think I can do it now though.” Adam isn’t even looking at me. But he’s not looking at Mason either, his eyes are fixed firmly on Clara. He’s as obsessed with her, just how I feel as well. But I’m sober enough to hold my shit together. “I can tell him. I want to see how Clara reacts as well. I need to see how she feels about me calling her out on it.”

“What the fuck is happening?” All of a sudden. Cain slips into the room behind Mason and Clara. He catches sight of me struggling with Adam immediately. “Adam, you seem way too drunk to be here. I think we should get you to bed.”

I nod along in agreement. “Yes, Adam, you don’t need to worry. I can speak to Mason. I can deal with all of this in a calm and considered manner.”

“But I know what’s happening. I can tell him…”

Cain gives me a confused look, but I simply try to let him know that I will fill him in later. This is something that I want to go to Mason about first. Thankfully, Cain sees what I need and offers me an out. “Right, Adam, we’re going to bed. Sledge is going to deal with things, okay? You need to come with me, all right? I have to look out for you.”

I can see that Adam doesn’t like this, but he agrees nonetheless.

Thank goodness he’s gone, though. I don’t think that Adam would be able to handle this properly, and it would end up being something of a disaster. Now I can deal with it properly. All I will have to make sure that I do is keep my eyes off of Clara because my God, staring at her is like looking into the sun. She’s burning my eyes, setting my soul on fire. I don’t know what it is about this woman, but I crave her in an unbearable way. I imagine this is what addiction feels like—like I can’t get enough.

I can’tnotsee her, though, because Mason has his hand tightly around her hip. He can’t bear to let her go, either. I’m starting to realize that he might not want to kill her, just because she’s the new alpha, leaving us all in a very awkward position. Adam definitely has feelings for Clara, and I’m starting to realize that I like her, too. Knowing our luck, Cain probably likes her too, which will really put our pack in a pickle.

But I do what I can to push all of that to one side as I stride toward Mason. I try and get the blinkers on because I don’t want to look at Clara, but she’s dragging my eyes in anyway. She really does seem to have something magical about her.

“Mason, I need to talk with you,” I declare stiffly. “Alone, if you have a moment.”

He doesn’t look like he wants to let go of Clara, which is expected. Being this close to her, my heart is hammering painfully against my rib cage, so I can’t even begin to imagine what it’s like for him. But he’s going to have to let her go. He doesn’t have a choice.

“I guess so, yeah.” He frowns but follows me. “What the hell is going on?”

Clara edges over to the bar as me ad Mason take a spot near the door frame, so I can escape quickly when this escalates and explodes.

“Mason, me and Adam went to scout out the new alpha of the pack today like you asked me to. To, you know, put the alpha down…”

“Did you do it?” he demands angrily, already sensing that things didn’t go well.

“We didn’t. But that’s because you’re with her right now.”
