Once the wholecrew coming with me is in wolf form, we head out to the woodland area on the outskirts of the city, where the Gray clan lives in huts. They really do live the sort of nomadic life that I couldn’t even begin to imagine. Ofcourse, the wolves here are going to want to eventually become a part of my clan. How could they not want to? They’d certainly be able to live a lot better than this. This is like hell.

“Whoa, what the hell?” someone cries out when they spot the charge coming towards them, snatching away the element of surprise but not before we’re already on top of them... “Wolves!”

Some people run away from us, others charge towards, shifting into their wolf form as they go. As I commanded, we only focus on the ones who want to fight us. Everyone herecouldshift and fight, but a lot of them think better of it... a wise decision on their part. Anyone who knows what’s best for them is all right in my book.

The fight gets bloody and brutal, but if these are the ‘strong soldiers’ that the Gray alpha was talking about, then he’s an idiot. We’re making easy work of them, taking them down easily, tearing them to shreds, showing them who is boss.

The only problem I have here is not seeing the alpha. Where ishehiding? He should be out here, fighting us alongside his soldiers. Asshole, if he isn’t here, then where is he?

I do what I can to sniff him out. It’s hard with everyone trying to come at me, attacking me from every side, but I can smell parts of him. It seems to me like he’s still in his human form, which is utter shit. How can he allow this shit to happen? I wouldnever...

Finally, I manage to sneak around the back of one of the huts without anyone spotting me, and I shift back into my human form. I’m going to face Gray in the same way he is. If he’s human, then I’ll deal with him in that way.

“Ah, there you are,” I growl with my hands curled up into fists by my side, anger burning red mist all the way through my body. “I’ve been looking for you.”

Gray’s eyes pop wide. “What the hell is all of this? What’s happening here? We were having a party last night, and now you’re attacking me? Seriously.”

I take one step closer to him, allowing my shoulders to roll up by my ears. Fuck this guy. Now that I’m standing in front of him, I hate him. I despise him with every fiber of my being. He’s a coward, an asshole, and he doesn’t deserve to keep on living.

“You should’ve kept your big mouth shut,” I tell him gravely. “Now this is your punishment.”

“Punishment? No, I don’t think I need to be punished. Seriously. We can just talk this through.” He holds up his hands in a surrendering gesture. “Please, stop this.”

I let my lips curl up into a nasty looking smile. I need this man to know that it’s over and done with. There is nothing he can do to change my mind. “It’s too late. I can’t stop anything.”

“You can, Mason. You’re the alpha. You can control all of this.”

I offer him a one-shouldered shrug. “Well, maybe I don’t want to put an end to this. Maybe this is exactly what I want. To put an end to your pack.”

He sucks in a sharp breath. “Why would you want to do such a thing? What have I ever done to you? Fuck, we haven’t even been in Chicago for a long time...”

“Well, maybe you should never have come here. It’s a dangerous city. Chicago has a reputation for a reason. You must have known that before you came here...”

Gray is speechless, allowing me to get even closer to him. I can smell the fear rolling off of him in waves. “Why? I don’t understand why? What’s going on?”

“Because your pack is a threat to mine and to my city. I won’t have that.” I wrap my hand lightly around his throat, giving him yet another signal that he can’t get out of. “I don’t know who you think you are, but you need to be gone. I am done with this.”

The light starts to fade in Gray’s eyes as he realizes that I truly am serious. “Please, Mason. You don’t need to save everyone. You can kill off all the strongest members of my pack. I don’t mind about that. I understand why you might need them gone, but I’m no danger. Me on my own. You can spare me, can’t you? There’s no need to killme.”

“You fucking coward,” I spit out. “Putting yourself before your pack. What sort of alpha does that make you? Not one that deserves to keep living, that’s for sure. You are in charge of your people for a reason, because you should protect them always.”

As I tighten my hand around his throat, the panic well and truly starts to set in. I can see the fear flooding his face as he realizes this is it. I’m not just messing around or trying to threaten him. I really am done completely. He tries his best to fight against the inevitable, scratching at my hands, but it makes no difference at all.

“Revenge will come—” he just about manages to blurt out breathlessly. His eyes bug out of his head as my vice-like grip makes breathing harder for him. “—from the one you least suspect. This won’t just die away...”

I shrug him off, not bothered one way or the other, before I shut him off once and for all by shifting into my wolf form and tearing his throat out. Fuck, this city doesnotneed a coward like him. Especially not one with strong soldiers—if any of them really were that strong—and how he’s behaving doesn’t make me feel like I will have people after me. No one will want revenge for that wimp. He wanted to send everyone else to death to keep himself alive. I really think his followers will come flocking to me soon enough, building my crew up much bigger, and allowing me to grasp onto a little bit more control once more.

CLARA

“Oh my God.” My heart sinks. It’s like my whole world has been rocked to its very core. “I can’t believe this. I can’t believe I wasn’t here. I feel so horrible.”

This is all because I couldn’t keep my big mouth shut. Ihadto go and have an unnecessary argument with Brian because of the party last night. Because he was having a go at me for ‘disappearing’, and of course I couldn’t just tell him where I was. So instead, I had to retort back that I didn’t want to go to the stupid party anyway and that he forced me into it. I yelled and ended up storming off because I didn’t want to talk about what I really did, which I still can’t quite believe. That I hooked up with freaking Mason Thompson, of all people. Wow, I mean it was one hell of a night. He made me feel great, even better than I thought anyone could. He blew my actual mind. It was insane. It really did feel like a dream.

But none of that matters anymore. Not now, because my pack has been attacked. Brutally so, the men from the pack are all dead, including Brian. I can’t believe it. I’m shaken to the very core. I don’t know what happens from here on out. What will become of the pack?

“Mason Thompson,” my closest friend, Daniella, tells me through gritted teeth. “It was him. Really him, and his pack. Doesn’t that seem incredibly weird? Like, we were all partying together and it seemed like everything was fine. Why now? Why has he come to do this to us? I don’t understand. We have lived in a lot of places, but this…”
