Chapter 6

Ipaced the lengthof the living room, anxiously chewing on my nails as I waited for my father to come home. I tried reaching him on his phone, then my Uncle Hale, and after that, Micah. No answer.

They still had to be on the run. I never knew the details about runs since it was club business. Usually, I didn’t care. But today, I needed help and didn’t know what to do.

My anxiety was starting to eat a hole through my composure, and I would lose my shit.

Grim, the Royal Bastards MC President in Tonopah, ordered Will, one of the prospects, to watch over me while my dad, Uncle Hale, and Micah were out of town. I didn’t mind one of the guys hanging around, except I hooked up with Will several times in the past, and now it was awkward. He wanted more. I didn’t.

His full name was Robert Williams. He became a prospect a few months after Micah. The club had given him the nickname Will because there wasn’t a single thing he wouldn’t do. Drugs. Women. Danger. Anything a club brother asked. A dare. You name it.

Will stood on my front porch smoking a cigarette when I opened the door, needing fresh air. The house was beginning to stifle me. My skin itched, and I felt restless.

So strange.

“Hey, darlin’.”

“Hey, Will.”

I stepped off the porch, walked to the sidewalk, and stared in both directions down the street like that would bring my family home sooner. We used to have two houses next door to one another, but my dad moved us into Uncle Hale’s a few years ago. It made sense. The four of us didn’t need the extra room or expense. My dad never planned to remarry, and Uncle Hale felt the same way.

We had always been close. Living together made it seem more like I had two dads and a brother instead of an uncle, a father, and a cousin. The distinction didn’t matter. I loved our family unit and didn’t care what anyone else thought.

I was raised to think independently and not conform to what society dictated as right or wrong. Fuck anyone who wanted to judge us or gossip.

“You seem upset, honey.”

I sighed, turning to Will. “I’m worried.”

“About your family or someone else?”

I didn’t answer.

“Ah. Cowboy. Has to be.”

“It’s Country, not Cowboy, but that’s only to me. His name is Spook.”

Will grinned. “Awful defensive about him, aren’t ya?”

“Don’t,” I warned.

“I didn’t say shit, baby. Just making an observation.”
