A strangled sound escaped my lips. I was positive that I heard her wrong.

“I don’t love you, Country.” Her voice wavered, betraying the lie.

Why would she say this? What happened?

“I don’t believe you.”

“You need to believe me.” Her desperation felt real.

“Tell me what’s happening.”

She shook her head, a sob escaping as she pulled away from me. “You need to leave.”

“No,” I growled. “We lost two years, Heather. I’m not losing any more time.”

Her eyes widened, and I swore I saw fear enter them for a split second. The deep blue dulled as she picked up a t-shirt and slipped it over her naked body.

This couldn’t be the way we ended. I refused to allow it.

“Babe. Please.”

“Go, Country. Don’t come back.”

“I’ll give you some time, but this isn’t over.”

She didn’t answer.

Numb, I dressed, approaching her a final time to place a kiss on top of her head. “My love for you will never die. Remember that. I’m here. Always.”

My boots were the only sound in the house until I reached the front door. When it opened, I heard her crying, and it almost broke me. Something was wrong with my girl. I needed to find out what happened and how I could fix this.

Micah had to know.

Bright sunshine greeted me outdoors, far too cheery for my aching heart.

I officially escaped one hell to arrive in another. No fucking way I would let outside forces pull us apart again.

Heather couldn’t push me away forever.

We didn’t come this far to lose each other now. I had to find a way to rebuild what we lost. I wouldn’t give up.

“Fight for us, Wildfire. Please,” I whispered, staring at her bedroom window as I stood in her yard and the blinds that closed, shutting me out. “I need you to fight.”
