As I approached, I realized she was drunk.

“Hey, lover,” she slurred as I took the glass from her hand and pushed it away from her reach.

“We need to talk.” Before she could protest, I scooped her up, carrying her out of the bar as a few lewd comments were tossed our way.

“Where are we going?”

“My room.”

She lowered her head, resting her cheek on my shoulder as she stared up at my face. “I hate keeping secrets.”

“Then why are you?”

“Because I have to protect the people I love.”

That sounded ominous.

“You know you can tell me anything, right? I’m always here for you, Raven.”

She sighed. “I know. That’s why I have to shushhhhhh,” she giggled, stretching out the word.

Yeah. My girl was wasted. She wasn’t leaving my room tonight.

I managed to unlock and open my door before carrying her inside and placing her on my bed. Fuck. She looked perfect in it, too.

“It’s getting late,” she whispered, resting her head on one of my pillows. “I should go home.”

Heather didn’t move, staring up at my ceiling.

I locked the door and kicked off my boots, closing the distance between us as I joined her on the bed. “You’re welcome to stay here. I’ll keep you safe.”

“You always have.”

I reached for her leg, propping a calf over my lap so I could remove one of her strappy black heels. I dropped the shoe beside the bed and reached for the other foot.

She sat up when I finished, reaching behind her back for the zipper on her dress. “I can’t reach it,” she pouted.

“Allow me.”

I moved behind her, slowly pulling down the zipper as my mouth watered, taking in all the perfect flawless skin revealed as she pushed the material off. The dress ended up on the floor. I didn’t care, too engrossed in the beautiful woman next to me to give a shit about anything else.

“What happened to your stutter?” she asked, reaching for me as I leaned closer. “When you came back, it was gone.”

She noticed.

“I worked on it for the two years I was gone.”

“I miss it. It’s a part of my cowboy.”

“It still happens once in a while,” I admitted.

“Your nervous tick is gone, too. No more long blinks.”

Did she watch me as closely as I watched her? I thought she lost interest. She acted like I didn’t mean anything to her. For eight months, she avoided being alone with me until tonight. This was my only chance to find out why.

“I miss you, Wildfire. Every minute of every day.”

“I miss you too.” She tapped her chest, and I tried not to stare at the perfect tits begging for my mouth.
