Page 55 of Spook's Possession

Country held his phone, tapping the flashlight so we could see as he opened the only entrance door. “I’m going in first. Watch out for trouble.”

Twitchy held a gun, nodding her head as I stayed behind my Spook. This building was creepy. The walls creaked as if shadow people lurked in the darkness and waited to jump out and attack us. I thought I heard an eerie wail.

Shivering, I reached for the back of Country’s shirt, grabbing a handful of material.

We walked through the bottom floor, weaving in and out of all the rooms. Everything was abandoned. No one was there.

“Shit.” Twitchy shook her head. “This doesn’t make sense. Why did she come here?”

“Maybe she was forced to come here,” I offered in the way of explanation. We should keep looking upstairs.”

Twitchy led the way, climbing ahead of us. Her gun discharged, and I screamed when she laughed. “Fucking rats.”

“I almost peed myself,” I admitted. “For real.”

Country laughed.

We almost searched the entire building until we found a locked door at the end of a hall upstairs.

Country stared at the door. “We need to open it. Now!”

He rushed toward it, yanking on the handle, but it wouldn’t unlock. The door didn’t budge even when he rammed his shoulder into it.

“I would shoot it, but we don’t know who or what is behind the door.”

Yeah. Good idea.

Twitchy rushed through the open rooms around us, finding an old fire alarm and an ax behind glass. “Watch out!” She heaved a chair against the glass, and it shattered. Reaching inside, she yanked the axe free and ran back to the locked door.

It didn’t take much effort for her to hack into it or break apart the knob, busting the lock. The door swung open.

On the floor, covered in blood, Georgia rested against an old desk. Her gun was in her hand, but she wasn’t conscious.

Holy shit!

She must have barricaded herself in the room after she was shot. I could see a wound on her right shoulder with a trail of blood soaking into her clothes.

Twitchy screamed her name, dropping to her knees as she examined the wound.

Country joined her, pressing his fingers to her neck. “She’s got a pulse.”

I pulled out my phone and dialed 9-1-1. An operator answered as I described where we were and that a friend had been shot.

Twitchy applied pressure to Georgia’s wound and lightly slapped her cheek with her free hand. “Hey, babe. You need to wake up.”

Georgia moaned. Her eyes fluttered and then opened wide. She tried to move but ended up crying out in pain instead.

“Hey! Stop. We called for help. You’ve been shot.”

Georgia looked scared. “He took her, Twitch.”

“Who?”

“Cliff. He took Kylie to that cult.”

My eyes widened as Country swallowed, his body stiffening with her words. Were those freaks everywhere?

“The one where they wear those robes with the golden halo around the sword?”
