“Boys will get ideas,” I argued firmly.

“Aaaargh!” she yelled as she threw her hands in the air. “It’s not fair.”

“You’re my precious baby girl. It’s my job to protect you.”

Her big blue eyes—so much like my own—filled with moisture, and a fat crocodile tear slipped down her cheek.

Fucking hell.

“I’m growing up, Daddy. You can’t protect me forever.”

I scoffed. “Watch me.”

Her tears began to come in earnest, and I felt a crack in my resolve. My eyes darted down next to me, where my wife sat on the couch, watching me with a smug expression. “You want to back me up on this?”

Tessa shook her head and smirked. “I warned you the day she was born, Kian.”

My eyes narrowed, making it clear she would pay for this later.

“I’m not taking her side either.”

“That’s not gonna save your pretty little ass, sweet girl,” I growled, low enough that only she would hear.

“Ewww, Daddy,” Tabitha said in a disgusted tone. “Just because I can’t hear what you’re saying doesn’t mean I don’t understand. Do you have to do that in front of me?”

“You’ll understand when you’re older,” I murmured with a chuckle.

“Great!” she shrieked happily and ran over to give me a hug before practically skipping out of the room. “Thank you, Daddy!”

“Wait…” I looked back and forth between my daughter and my wife. “What just happened?”

Tessa was laughing too hard to answer at first. I went back over the conversation and still couldn’t figure out why she’d suddenly been happy and thanking me.

“You said she’d know when she’s older, babe,” Tessa explained.

“Yeah…so?”

“She has to date for that to happen.”

“What the fuck?” How had she…? I frowned and spun on my heel, ready to storm after my daughter.

“Kian,” she said softly, “Let it go, honey. You’ll have to get used to the idea of your daughter dating. It might as well be now.”

I sighed and glared at the doorway but remained where I was knowing my wife was right. And fucking hating it.

Finally, I slowly turned back around and scowled at Tessa. “Okay. Let’s talk about the fact that you didn’t take my side in forbidding my precious baby girl to be around handsy teenage punks.”

She rolled her eyes and pushed to her feet. “You’ve met Grady. He’s not stupid enough to be handsy with our girl. No boy in this town would risk your wrath. I was worried no one would ask her to a dance until she was in college.”

“And the problem with that is…?”

Tessa patted my chest before walking away. “You’ve lost this round, babe,” she tossed over her shoulder.

Her swaying hips, which had only gotten sexier after having our five kids, stole my attention. Even after seventeen years, my need for her hadn’t diminished. It had only grown.

“We’ll continue this discussion tonight when the kids are with Rom and Layla,” I grunted.

When Tessa winced sitting at the breakfast table the next morning, I was confident I’d made my point.
